Anyone seen the new TRU-exclusive Doc? Apparently his filecard states that his preferred weapon is the same "820 Selective-Fire, Long Range Fully Automatic Assault Rifle" that all the other Joes prefer, despite, you know, not using a gun.

Ha ha . The new file cards are packed so full of fail. One of these days, I'm going to mock-up a custom of that mysterious "820 Selective-Fire, Long Range Fully Automatic Assault Rifle" that's apparently so popular. Not only is it a selective fire weapon, it's also fully automatic! I'm surprised they didn't also call it a "long-range far shooting assault attack rifle firearm weapon"

Keep in mind, I noticed this fact then promptly threw the card in the trash. |

Last Q&A Hasbro said the filecards would remain the same EXCEPT they would change out the weapons.

"Comprised of" is ungrammatical in terms of prescriptive grammar conventions. That's what I've always taught students based on Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. The word "comprise" means "to consist of" or "be composed of" in most senses that it is used.
Thus, it would be correct to say something like "the Triple T's armament comprises two missiles and two cannons." It would be incorrect to say "the Triple T's armament is comprised of two missiles and two cannons," since the of after comprised is redundant. Another alternative would be to say that "the Triple T's armament is composed of two missiles and two cannons." The Canadian Department of Justice(!) website has the best explanation I know of with regards to the proper usage of the word "comprise," while also acknowledging that more and more people are beginning to use "comprise of" in place of "compose of." Check it out here. I readily accept that people use "comprised of" to mean "composed of" in everyday conversation and informal settings, but it just bothers me slightly that a paid editor would miss something that basic (I've taught the "comprise vs. compose" distinction to high school students!), particularly since Bellomo's book, at $30 Canadian, is positioned as something of a mid to high end specialist publication. Just like any product I pay for (be it a toy, a book, or a video game), I expect a certain amount of professional polish/quality control in keeping with the price I paid for the item. Yeah, I do see your point. I sort of feel the same way even when I'm reading comics. Yes, they're just comics, not books, but given that, they should be even easier to proofread for errors. There are tons of errors in the Marvel series, especially when the wrong character names are used or when characters have different outfits than the ones they were just wearing in the same previous scene.
On a monthly title that costs 75 cents or whatever comics used to cost, I'd be more than happy to ignore typos and mislabeled/mis-coloured characters (I'm pretty easy to please, believe it or not, when it comes to my entertainment). Despite my misgivings about the editing though, I still heartily recommend getting Bellomo's book if you can. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes information in there that any "What Secrets Lurk In The Filecards?" regular would find very interesting (Hama's strongly worded written reactions to Hasbro regarding the introduction of Footloose, the Dr. Mindbender design, and Cesspool, for example). |

Just one thing (and here I am being all pedantic again ). Constitutionally, only the CIA is allowed to conduct legally deniable covert operations. This was established by the National Security Act of 1947 (sec. 503) and upheld and confirmed by later amendments, and expanded upon by Reagan's Executive Order 12333. What the DoD and its subordinate branches can conduct are clandestine operations, which are defined by a different set of legal parameters.
Here are the definitions, as taken from the DoD Dictionary of Military Terms:
Well, the C.I.A.'s Directorate of Operations is now the National Clandestine Service, or NCS. The Special Operations Community is tasked with "Covert" operations all the time. How they file the paperwork is one thing, what actually happens is another. Rumsfeld pushed the D.I.A. to develp it's HumInt operations substancially, and the C.I.A. was not pleased. All I'm saying is that it would be plausible to put the Joes as a D.I.A. unit.
