From what I read in Bellomo's book, it sounded like Larry wanted to cap the expansion of the Joes with the 3rd Wave (Duke, Roadblock, etc.). It didn't dawn on me until recently that Flash was the original CBR specialist. And good choice on the Bronco, Zulu, although I always wanted it to be a Joe plane.

Sure, piston engine and turboprop driven planes might look quaint by modern sea-based aerial warfare systems standards, but turboprops (like the OV-10 Bronco and the Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano) are still the mainstay of current insurgency and counterinsurgency air warfare, and I think would be right up Cobra's alley.

If we take the stance that Cobra is a legally recognized corporate organization, I just can't see the US government allowing them to use DoD-exclusive technology (such as the A-10). And even then, a single A-10 would be horribly expensive (around $12 million), even for a large-ish corporation. A whole squadron (never mind a wing) of the aircraft would probably bankrupt a company unless they were being paid as part of the standing air force of a nation.

Ah, I failed to qualify my statement. I've always looked at Cobra as how they were depicted as Third World warmongers however briefly in the original Marvel comics (between the death of the original Cobra Commander and the death of Serpentor): not directly engaging GI Joe in battle, but rather, creating unrest in developing nations and then profiting from the sales of weapons in the resulting civil wars. In that sense, the OV-10 Bronco would be the perfect Cobra plane... a proven and effective airborne weapons platform that's cheap enough to sell to tinpot dictators and self-righteous freedom fighters alike.

As much as it would have to be more believable for Cobra to sort of fight a bush war, they seem to have a limitless supply of everything.
I sort of like the idea of them attacking somewhere and going all out with as much hardware the can muster. Then a smaller Joe force who just happens to be nearby, repels the attack with a couple of RAMs, 2 Skyhawks, One Armadillo, and a 5pack of Juicy Fruit. But seriousy, what about the former Soviet Union? I'm sure you can get a MIG for a steal. And what if MARS or Cobra has a Recapture, Refurbish division, that buy up old fighters from various countries around the world, so they can purge old inventories and buy the latest and greatest from Lockheed or Mcdonnell Douglas. Meanwhile they now have a fleet of MIG29 for say $11million a piece. (Including purchase and refurbishing cost with state of the art MARS tech) I'm totally makin up these numbers, but I'm assuming CC or the Twins or Destro are champion negotiators. Yeah I can't see Cobra getting A-10s or any US aircraft. I would say they would base their main strike aircraft after a Soviet style aircraft, or smaller fighters like the Bronco, such as the Firebat, Night Adder, or Crimson Hydra. I would say they might have one squad or less of Night Ravens. And the same for their bombers like the Condor. Although I imagine they see the benefit of VTOL so maybe they had a couple of squads of Rattlers atone time only to replace those with Hurricanes, and now they are working on the Gunship. |

I've never liked where Cobra had these huge fantastical bases. Those things would be next to impossible to build without someone finding out.
I never liked the Joe/Cobra Air Force and Navy. It just creates too much problems and contradictions. They can have air units and naval units, but trimmed back. The Bronco would be perfect for them in those cases.

And speaking of the OV-10 Bronco, I actually consider it to be a a better modern-day and realistic analogue of the Cobra Rattler than the A-10 Thunderbolt II (a.k.a. Warthog).
If we take the stance that Cobra is a legally recognized corporate organization, I just can't see the US government allowing them to use DoD-exclusive technology (such as the A-10). A whole squadron (never mind a wing) of the aircraft would probably bankrupt a company unless they were being paid as part of the standing air force of a nation. The OV-10 Bronco seems more like it would fit Cobra's needs: a relatively affordable (~$400000 per unit), small, low-maintenance, and agile ground attack/reconnaissance STOL with a proven track record in "small wars" in the deserts and jungles of the developing world. For the cost of one A-10, a mercenary group could get two squadrons of OV-10s (about 30 aircraft!). |

I always wondered how they got it built and got it around without all the other countries air forces shooting it down.
