I'm not sure how I feel about General Rey. Don't fully like the character, but had his moments.

What issues did Rey appear in? I don't really remember him. Was he only in Elite?

He was in DDP, right before the Red Shadows. He appeared first working for the US government, chopped off Bludd's other hand. Then they put him in charge of the Joes when the government forced the reconfigure to an 8 man team. This was right around the time that Cobra attacked the PIT and Black-Out was "rescued" by Cobra from the prison he was in.
He was with the Joes up thru the Red Shadows stuff. Then didn't appear again until the Phoenix Guard in AE.

I like Rey but there so much about his story that just doesn't work. No one asked too many questions when he showed up. Because if he was an excelerated clone, then how did he get in the system and make it to General so fast without anyone noticing? Not saying there couldn't be a explanation for it. Like he was doing special ops for so long all his records were classified. The Jugglers could have pulled it off I suppose.
For him to fit in with any of the clone background then he would have to have been started way before the original Serpentor. Like the US government started the process like maybe after Captain America. Mindbender maybe had ties to that project and started his own with Destro many years later. But it was never clear which genes they used for Rey, and how Cobra gained control of him or expected to. You would figure Rey would be using genes from some of AMerica's greatest generals and soldiers. |

Hey Guys,
I don't mean to barge into the conversation, but I noticed you were discussing General Rey, and it peaked my interest. I remember that we had a BIG discussion on him several hundred pages back. He's one of my favorite parts of the DDP run, and y'all are both right: there's a LOT about the character that just doesn't work. I do like the way he was portrayed: Lead from the Front, Fast Attack - He's a Tough Leader and Smart as a Whip. He seems like he could be a Marine or Airborne Ranger Brigadeer General; he just seemed to have that kind of mindset - Aggressive. The bit about his "back story" as a clone is problematic to say the least. However, taken on simply the merits of the character as he acted, his backstory aside, I found him to be a very likeable character: A competent Leader with a Warrior Mindset who was very smart. He sort of comes across like a Super Trooper with a Star. I have an excellent custom that I got over a year ago on ebay. I'm very happy with it. And I use General Rey as an integral part of my Joeverse. He works with my Joe Special Operations Command (which is commanded by General Colton) as the Special Operations Land Forces Commander - He basically commands all the Special Ops Army assets the Joes have. I gave him the code name: Grey Fox. He's still General Philip Rey... I just figured he needed a code name to be on the Joe Team, and "GREY" is spelled that way as opposed to "GRAY" because it's like his name "G(eneral) Rey". I have to give Tanksmasher and Loose Cannon credit for that. In my Joeverse, he's a lot different than he was in DDP... however, given Hasbro's recent statements on the canonicity of the DDP run, I think it's fair game. I got the impression from reading what Hasbro stated that they would almost like to forget that the DDP stuff ever happened.

Yeah, I think Hasbro was disappointed in DDP's stuff.
But Rey as a character, ignoring the origin, is a good character. I see him more as a Colonel, instead of General. Think of the movie We Were Soldiers and Colonel Hal Moore. That's how I see Rey. First on the ground and last off the ground. In the thick of things with his men and when command says "we want you out of there" he tells command "go F yourself"

It doesn't help that the largest age demographic for the past few years for anything GI Joe-related is probably the joint Gen X/partial leading edge Echo Boomers (people born in the late 1960s all the way to the mid-1980s), so I think it's safe to assume that a lot of them are fairly well-read (as a function of their advanced age relative to other comic book readers) and even jaded when it comes to comics and other action/adventure-based fiction. So unless DDP hit their take on GI Joe out of the park at the first bat (and they didn't, at least for me), they were looking at a real struggle to gain even a fraction of the same marketplace and pop culture relevance of the old Marvel GI Joe comics. Some of the plots of the DDP comics had potential, but the writing was just so atrocious. I think the only way the comic would have been successful was if they had brought Larry on board and let him go with the storyline he created for the defunct Bench Press Comics. As an aside, I want to thank all of you who reccomended Mark Belomo's book. I just got it this weekend and it's been hard to put it down! I noticed several of the personality profiles tha Belomo talks about were actually used in the Order of battle comics. Steeler and Rock 'n' Roll come to mind.
