Absolutely, stburr91. This is what I'm working on now but within the context of the Vietnam War. Been reading a ton of books on military organization, Special Forces, SOG, LRP, snipers, the common infantryman, medics, SEALs, Marine Recon, Mobile Riverine Force, Rolling Thunder, etc. I got a lot of research done and some cool ideas for stories involiving various Joes in Nam, but I'm going for a realistic depiction, not simply a characterization. I've written some stuff, loosely based on the early file cards and some of the comics. Right now I'm learning about Combat Tracker Teams, in which we'll see Mutt, the team's dog handler, and Spirit, the visual tracker, working together.

Ideology has to be a key element. Mercenaries are simply unreliable. They work for money. They take calculated risks. It's not worth dying for money because the dead can't spend it. So they aren't going to do something that greatly increases the risk of them getting killed. A conscription army is even less effective because people who don't want to be there or don't believe in the fight are just going to get in the way. The most effective army would be an all-volunteer force like the US military today. Sure you entice people with decent pay and benefits and the romanticism of war and the opportunity for adventure, but men are more often willing to fight and die for freedom and country and God and the like, than anything else, at least initially, and then it just becomes about the men you serve with. That's why indoctrination is so important during basic training. It's important that men believe they are fighting for a just and noble cause or else they just won't take certain risks. This of course is a great way for corrupt and imperialistic governments to get young people to fight a war that they shouldn't be fighting but that's another discussion altogether.

Hmmm. Depends on the quality of the writing, I suppose. I'm a sucker for well-researched and even-handed military fiction (not so much the "Hollywood style" melodramatic/macho chest-thumping stuff or gun porn, though). If it's going to be a story featuring characters based only loosely on Joes, I think my preference as a reader would be for the similarities to stop just short of using the same names and such (it's supposed to be a loose adaptation, right?), to prevent readers' preconceived notions of the classic characters from colouring and possibly detracting from the story you're trying to tell.
I don't have enough to bother posting, but when I do, I'll post it to see what you guys think. |

I'm getting ready to head out but I can fill you guys in later. CCTs are pretty interesting, though. They were trained secretly by SAS at the British Jungle Warfare School. Unlike the scout dog platoons that used German Shepards to search and make contact with the enemy, the CCTs used Labs to find the enemy after contact was broken. Once the dog picked up the trail, the visual tracker took over. A team had one lab, a dog handler, a team leader, a visual tracker and two covermen, one usually carrying a radio and the other an M60, who secured the team's flanks.

Very interesting. I might have to move Mutt out of the Protective Services, never really liked him there but didn't have any where else to put a dog handler.
Now I do.

I hope you're doing well over there... y'all staying warm enough? Yeah, I would never tell another Tanker how he or she should or shouldn't use a figure. However, for me, I'm going to use City Strike Beach-Head as Sabretooth. His paint job just looks like Tiger Force to me, and I've always been curious about that character we never got. I've got a Ripcord from the 7-pack that I'm going to have custom painted as a Tiger Force version because he was supposed to be in the unit as well. And I'm using the SRO Torpedo as Tiger Force Torpedo. It'll be a nice way to round out my Tiger Force - I use Tiger Force as the main Joe presence in South America (Sierra Gordo). Using the new Ripcord as Static line is an awesome idea. Are you going to make the other members of Sky Patrol as well? And as for all this talk about Afghanistan's poppy industry... it seems pretty political to me. So y'all might want to be careful. I have a cousin who I'm very close to who is recovering from Heroine addiction in a State run facility. He got arrested last fall and he's really struggling. So I'm biased. But as far as I'm concerned any industry that supports the drug trade should be torched. To Hell with Afghanistan's economy; I'm more concerned with the American lives that are being ruined by the drugs that come in from overseas.

Nice use for Tiger force guys. I bet that new Ripcord will work as a Tiger Force character. I think the paint job is similar to POC Beachhead. You know I have to wait and see when I have that Beachhead in hand to decide. He might even work as Wreckage.
I had a Tiger Force Beachhead who I wanted to use as Sabretooth but he wasn't different enough. I colored the exposed skin with a thin brown sharpie to make Rampage. I got a Desert Firefly who I use as Sabretooth now.(Basically a matching Firefly head on a Dusty body) I was using the Snarler Beachhead as Wreckage. But you could put any head on that body, provided it doesn't sit too high. (Personally I like the biker boots Oliver, plus he's much taller than most figures) Speaking of the Snarler, I use Rollbar as Countdown. I wanted to reclaim any Joe I barely use. I follow Zulu's use for him as a Air Liason officer. If I had another one I may want to swap out the head to make Sky Patrol Airborne. There aren't as many blonde headed joes anymore, but the paint scheme is almost perfect. Airborne(Six) is probably the least silly Sky Patrol figure, with the most infuriating name. |

I use the Snarler Rollbar as a new guy named Street.
Although making Airborne (Six) out of him is a pretty good idea with a head swap. But since Snarler Rollbar is a repainted Sgt. Airborne, he has a darker skin tone. The only figure I've found that matches the skin tone perfectly is RoC Shipwreck. A RoC Shipwreck head on the Airborne body looks pretty good.

Paint everything else black. (exposed skin I mean.) It's not like V1 has any skin showing.
