The Ultimate Guide to GI JOE 1982-1994 2nd Edition by Mark Bellomo.
Lowlight pg.109, Doc pg 32, Dreadnoks pg. 87, Roadblock pg 56, Duke 33 & 54, Baroness pg 57. It also adds the insert hasbro was to put in Duke's filecard if he was Major. "Current Grade: Major, Battlefield Commission in 1967. Captured by the NVA in 1969, Escaped six months later. Ran Special Ops School in Langley. Advisory commission on Special Warfare. Chairman, Combined Anti-Terrorism neutralization unit." Flint pg 78, Hama talks about the misprint of Flint's name. Dashiell Hammett the detective novelist and William Ewart Fairbairn of the Commando knife. So it seems the FAIR-skinnEd BORN was a typo that unintentionally makes a pun. But its still funny that indian sounding names come from Wichita. I bought Bellomo's book today, I would say this book has my vote of being better. Because it shows what the figure looked like, the weapons that [he] came with and some of the character design notes, it would have been nice for it to show filename, rank and MOS/SMS, but then the book would be too big. My best friend thought I should get "The JOE vs. Cobra Essential Guide" but didnt appeal to me as much, because most of the stuff I already knew. It only had certain "main character" full filecard information and the rest of the Joes only had file name, birthplace, POS & SMS. Seemed too basic and the info provided was an overview (cheat sheet) for those who hadnt kept up and had no plans to read or watch anything of GI JOE ever again. There is stuff I would like for quick reference like the vehicle information and the Joes updated ranks, but not for the full 26 dollars. If I get lucky and find it for cheap at a 2nd hand bookstore or someone gives it to me, sure I will use it. But I plan on being around the source material. But that's just my opinion.

Didn't one of them try to link the comics, filecards and cartoon together?

I'm glad Hama, who has a military background, decided to revise this and had him refuse the commission. I figured Duke left Nam as an E6 and was promoted to First Sgt right before joining the Joes in 1983. |

I've browsed Bellomo's book... I think it's better in terms of providing behind-the-scenes and toy-specific info, it's definitely a book targeted towards the serious Joe toy collector. Hidalgo's book has slightly better production values but is probably better suited towards the lapsed (or new) Joe fan. It provides a better overview of the property than Bellomo's book, but I'm willing to bet most of us who frequent this thread are more knowledgeable about detailed Joe canon and Joe apocrypha than Hidalgo. |

Hidalgo's is the one to avoid for me then. I don't like the idea of trying to force a connection between all the different versions.

This is so strange. Battlefield Commission in '67? That means Duke would have at least been an E6 by then to have been offered a commission to Major, which also means he would have joined the army a few years before the enlistment of 1967 that Hama wrote. And that means he would have stayed a Major for 13 years until his appearance with GI Joe in 1983.

Perhaps not anymore--and usually it was a 2nd Lt commission, as with Bob Howard--but during Vietnam a few men were promoted from the enlisted ranks directly to Captain, and I thought I read that someone was commissioned a Major. Dick Meadows was commissioned from MSGT to Captain by Gen Westmoreland. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 01-11-2010 at 12:17 PM.. |

It's interesting that he lied about his age to join the army at 15. Imagine! Then he made MSGT at age 20, just five years later. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 01-11-2010 at 01:36 PM.. |

Jesus. I never heard of the guy, but he was a bigger badass than I ever imagined Duke to be. Or any of the joes for that matter.
