So this afternoon I was at Borders, spent about an hour with a book I cant recall the name of, but its like a essentials & price guide for GI JOES and had a few notes on each character. A couple of things that stuck out... Lowlight was originally a Navy Seal Sniper, maybe thats why the 2 different looking Lowlights. Doc originally was a medic with the rank of Specialist instead of a Doctor as a Captain. Hasbro wanted the DreadnOKS to be teddy bears... almost like EwOKS, Hama said good guys shooting teddy bears, that would upset the parents, lets make them a biker gang. But I guess the fatal fluffies made it to the cartoon. One of the choices for Roadblock's name was BUBBA, Hama advised against it on grounds of its a racist slur, but less than a decade later on Forrest Gump there was a BUBBA who had hopes of becoming a 'southern cook' just as soon as he did his tour. Mentioned here several times, but I love this concept, Duke originally a Major instead of First Sergeant. According to Hama, The Baroness didnt have an eastern european accent in the comics, she was an American that was fed up with Americans and moved away, married and became a Baroness and fought against democracy. This pissed off my two best friends who never read the comics and only watched the cartoon, and were blue in the face about the Baroness WAS and always is European, they compare the new movie to Street Fighter One, but worse. They cant stand that I was entertained by the new movie and I keep finding aspects which make it even better. Now if only I can find a way that the Baroness was originally Cobra Commander's sister. Dont get me wrong the new movie isnt perfect, but it is GI JOE. What book is that? In the Marvel Comics, she is Baroness Decobray whose brother gets killed, by which she thinks is Snake-Eyes. Didn't Hama write the filecards? YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Baroness First line: "The spoiled offspring of wealthy European aristocrats." Although it was never possible to pick up on the accent, she must of had one. Where do they get Lowlight as a Navy Seal sniper? Love the idea, but that was never mentioned anywhere, besides this book. Don't get the teddy bear Dreadnoks. if that is true it make you wonder who is in charge. Duke as a Major makes a lot of sense. Outside of the Marvel Comic he is always portrayed as more than an NCO. DDP made him a government agent which gave Duke greater authority. I liked that as it would be pretty realistic for a badass green beret\Delta Force equivalent to join a government agency like say the CIA Special Activities Division once the Joes shut down. I like Duke as a Major myself, but I was using him as a 0-7 equivalent until recently. |

I've heard that story before (I think I might have read it in an old Hama interview). Always thought it was more urban myth than anything, though. |

Yeah when did it switch to Cisarovna? During the Marvel years it was explained as Decobray, which I thought was sort of cheesy, but that was what it was. I guess during DDP they added Cisarovna.

I might be visiting the bookstore tomorrow, and buying the 'GI JOE vs. Cobra The Essential Guide 1982-2009' and this mysterious book that I cant find the cover online. Dont quote me yet but I believe its 'The Ultimate Guide to GI JOE 1982-1994' by Mark Bellomo

Edit: my take on if he was Navy... "Inserted off the coast with a raft at night in total darkness, 15 miles off the coast. 4 miles away he encounters a Patrol boat, He ditches the raft, dives down, doesnt want to take a shot because plans change when there are reports of enemy activity in the area and evades being spotted. Then he swims to land, hikes 45 miles inland. Meets up with Outback who arrived 2 days earlier, recieves his notes without a word and gets into position. Waits and waits for the motorcade. Takes the shot. Bullseye, and evades the search parties and then leaves". Dunno if thats how that works but yeah sounds awesome.

Interesting on Low-Light. His first look would kind of seem leaning more towards the Navy then Army anyways.
DeCobray was made into her real name during the Marvel run. Don't know when the Cisarovna came into it. One of these days I'll need to pick up the two books. Which is better? Bellomos or Hidalgos?

That Low Light excerpt sounds awesome! I wish they'd kept it on his file card. I've also heard the story about Hasbro wanting the 'noks to be like Ewoks, so it may not be just a myth. I don't remember exactly when The Baroness' name went from DeCobray to Cisarovna, but I know it was in the DDP era. It almost seems like it was the Sins of the Mother storyline.

It helps Tankssmasher though I was hoping to find out more about the pairings posted to the same helicopter, if they would have an Officer with a Warrant Officer, or if they would be both officers or both Warrant Officers? I know the Air Force would have two officers, because they 'decommissioned' the rank of warrant officers.

As for pairings, you might have a couple of scenarios in the Army: Right seat: Platoon Leader (O2) Left seat: Pilot (W2) or Right seat: Avn Safety Off or Avn Stdzn Off or Tac Ops Off (W3) Left seat: Pilot (W2) or Right seat: IP or ALSE Off or ASE/EW Off (W2) Left seat: Pilot (W2) |

i hear that the new Ambush is molded to look like the bubble boy lol(too soon?)
Quote:
Here's something I always found funny about Ambush's file card: "Ambush has no trouble staying out of sight. When he was ten years old, Ambush participated in a neighborhood game of hide-and-seek, then disappeared for three days. It wasn't until the National Guard was called to aid in the search that his well-camouflaged hiding place was discovered under his parent's front porch."
I don't know, but shouldn't he have realized that the other kids would have given up searching after an hour or so? He hid under the porch for three days! Either he had a mean step father or Ambush was a little slow. |
