Hmm, just reading back through the thread and about BFTB, I saw this (Beachhead): BEACH HEAD
and while he is iirc born in the same place, afaicr his filecard said he was NZ SAS on secondment to the Rangers. Will have to dig out my filecards and see if my memory is failing me! It would probably have made more sense for them to have made Action Force Beach Head from a NATO/NATO-friendly nation that actually has a formally named Ranger unit, though, like the US (which has the famous 75th Ranger Regiment, a special operations-capable airborne light infantry unit), Canada (which has three Ranger units: the Canadian Rangers, a reserve arctic/coastal reconnaissance unit, the Queen's York Rangers, a battlefield reconnaissance unit, and the Rocky Mountain Rangers, a light infantry unit), Ireland (which has the Irish Army Ranger Wing, their version of the SAS), Portugal (whose Special Operations Detachment is known by the nickname "Rangers"), the UK (which has an Army CBRN Recon unit called the Sherwood Rangers), Malaysia (which has a light infantry unit called the Royal Ranger Regiment), or the Philippines (whose 1st Scout Ranger Regiment is considered by many observers as one of the best trained units in tropical counterinsurgency warfare). Okay guys, this thread is slowly fading away and we need to keep it going. It has become a virtual HISS Tank tradition that we mustn't let die. What new avenues of filecard-inspired discussions can we explore? Surely there must be some new ideas out there. Some questions about Joe bios and histories and military experience we've yet to discuss. Do not lose hope. We must prevail. Keep the thread alive. Are we mice or are we Joes?

So which Joes got name changes and birthplace changes in RoC? RoC cards don't give birthplaces, but can we guess if they got nationality changes?
Airborne got renamed Airraid. Heavy Metal got renamed Rampage, who kept the Rampage name but went from being a black guy to being a white guy. Heavy Metal's filename is now used for Speed Metal. Bench Press's filename was the old Rock 'n Roll. Heavy Duty got a new filename and nationality. Breaker got a new filename and nationality. Scarlett got a new filename and at least in the novel is Canadian. Ripcord kept the same filename but became a black guy. So let's start with Heavy Duty, the RoC version, who I call Gatling. He's british, so what unit would he have come from? What's his training? The RoC cards are wide open, I think we got some room to play.

Yeah ROC lack of filecards leads for lots of speculation.
Also we tend not to discuss Cobra very much. I've also done some renaming with ROC figures but mostly headswaps to make 25th articulations of old figures. But just off that list. AirRaid as a pilot and an E-5? I keep Air Raid codename and made him a Lt. Benchpress Ranger? I'd say he's Rock'n'Roll's nephew. Their names aren't exactly the same. but since it's close enough and they are similar enough characters I think it's makes for a good case for why. What's the new name for Movie Scarlett. I'm using the RA version as Mayday with some Brown Hair painted. I guess we're suppose to assume Heavy Duty is SAS. Don't they mention it in the movie? Morroccan anti-terrorist unit almost seems like an oxymoron, although they have terrorists too. There is a Royal Guard in Morroco as well as an Elite Parachute Brigade. He might have come from there. Has anyone picked a good codename for Abel Shaz? I'm liking Shortburst. I like to pretend he is instead the kid that was tagging along with DUsty and Mainframe. |

As for Moroccan special operations-capable units... outside of their paratroopers, they don't really have anything that we in the West would traditionally consider as spec-ops. I'd like to imagine RoC Breaker (Abel Shaz) as having served with the 2e Régiment Étranger de Parachutistes, which is where many Algerian and Moroccan fighters traditionally served in the French Foreign Legion. The Foreign Paratrooper Regiment used to be one of the most respected and feared rapid reaction units of the 20th century, although they aren't as well-known now with the Foreign Legion's downsized role in France's expeditionary operations (where they've been supplanted in many ways by the French Army's Special Forces Brigade). |

Yeah Rashid.
I kind of like Scuzzy as it's easy to remember as Shortburst is more Radioman sounding. I probably stole the Shortburst from you anyway, Zulu. I would be way cooler if he came out of the French Foreign Legion. As that could explain his distress in the movie when they said he could never come back to Paris. |

I love Shortburst for a codename. It could work for an RTO or SWAT trooper. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 12-29-2009 at 06:14 PM.. |

Yeah. But he's just mail-order Heavy Metal with a different codename released in 1989. Everything else (file name, specialties, birthplace, the text on the filecard) is the same as the original Heavy Metal, which is why the 1989 Rampage figure isn't generally listed as a separate figure in most toy guides, but rather, as a variant of the original 1985 Heavy Metal figure. The second Rampage figure (released in 2003) on the other hand, was supposed to represent a totally different character (whose personal details are based on comic book artist Walter McDaniel's), although like the first Rampage (1989) figure, it was simply a repaint/re-deco (this time, based on Beach Head).
