Yeah, it was odd that they decided to go with Recondo as the Tiger Fly pilot. |

Recondo inexplicably replaces Wild Bill when Wild Bill makes more sense, then Wild Bill replaces Skystriker when Skystriker makes more sense. |

The local TRUs and Wal-Marts here are positively awash with Wild Bills. I'm almost tempted to buy them up just to clear peg space for new product. I think it's safe to say that Hasbro grossly overestimated Wild Bill's popularity with fans

The thing is, I actually do like Wild Bill. And the Beetlejuice head notwithstanding, I think the figure has a decent sculpt. I'd just rather have three Wild Bills and one Skystriker as opposed to four Wild Bills. But I don't want to complain about the choices made during the 25th era. Overall I'm pleased with what we got.

Yeah, in retrospect, I can't really complain too much about the representation in the 25th line. It is what it is, and there was no way Hasbro could have pleased fans of every character. My only real complaints with the 25th line are with the occasional odd engineering choices and spotty quality control with the early releases. |

Several pages back, we were discussing the different incarnations of Lt. Stone and their relationship (if any) to RoC's Sgt. Stone. One thing I think we totally missed is how the name "Sgt. Stone" is obviously a riff on war comic book icon Sgt. Rock. It's not the first time Hasbro has created a character obviously influenced by Sgt. Rock... Sgt. Savage, in terms of his visual design, is an obvious derivative of the character. Heck, they even hired Sgt. Rock co-creator Joe Kubert to illustrate the Sgt. Savage filecards and mini-comics!

Sgt Rock was really the precursor to Joe. An elite unit, they used nicknames for eachother instead of code names.

Not only that, but if memeory serves the name "Ice Cream Soldier" comes from a Sgt. Rock character who uses a flamethrower.

You know I had one issue of GI Combat which I cherised. Besides the Haunted Tank stories I had one issue that had a character who seemed very much like Snake-Eyes. I wish I could find that issue. An obvious ninja, he never spoke a word, and I think he was working for an OSS character who happened to have a metal leg and a patch on his eye. Very similar to Lt Stone from Sigma Six. Can't say it's only a coincedence. Maybe that character is just so ingrained in popular culture but I'm started to think that GI Joe was just an extension of GI Combat. Take this cover for example from a September 1976 issue:
Tell me that guy doesn't look familiar!! Last edited by Loose Cannon; 12-19-2009 at 03:35 PM.. |

Remember the old G.I. Robot? I have an issue of that kicking around somewhere. Good stuff.
But yeah, I bet some of the Joe stuff was borrowed from GI Combat.
