I think in this case it almost would have to hamper.
DDP picked up, albeit 7 years later, from the end of Marvel and was based off the Joe team not existing for those 7 years and Cobra being more underground. So the new series would have to start off with Joe getting reinstated again, Cobra being a big threat and then end with Joe getting shut down again a couple of years prior to the start of DDP and Cobra going underground. So really the new series could only cover a 5 year span (which in comic book world could be 100 issues) because it would have to end in time for Duke to join the CIA and Kamakura to be on Hammer Team and have plenty of time to train as SE's apprentice prior to DDP #1

The thing about Nth Man, is that the story works on two levels. Superficially, it's a neat military action book with some fantasy/martial arts elements thrown in. And I think most readers at the time (including myself) only took it that way. It was only re-reading it as an adult that I realised that Hama was also using the book to wax philosophical and metaphysical on the nature of good and evil and how they've been caricatured in comics. The end is particularly powerful with regards to him making his point that the portrayal of "good vs. evil" in most American comics is rooted in a simplistic and childish world-view, something that he's talked about in interviews since forever (note that most of the supporting characters, adults, freely switch from being "good" and "evil" and/or vice-versa through the course of the book... the only characters that stay consistently "pure good" and "pure evil" are John Doe and Alfie O'Meagan, both of whom are "arrested adolescents," emotionally stunted man-children).
You can probably piece together the whole collection from eBay at a reasonable price. My brother has the complete series pieced together from local comic book shops and eBay, and I think it cost him something like $20 in total. Last edited by zuludelta; 12-14-2009 at 04:01 PM.. |

I've been meaning to ask, with your Carrier Group, will all the personnel be Joes? or just some of the command/pilots/seals/marines???
If you're planning to include attack subs, I think Tonka or someone did a Joe sub in the 90's called the 'Tiger Shark' I think it was 1/48 scale but looked cool as hell. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 12-14-2009 at 06:20 PM.. |

You'll have to forgive the formatting, I haven't had the time to fix it up from the source. But if you already know what you're looking for, it's text-searchable. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 12-14-2009 at 07:16 PM.. |

How much crew would a freighter like the Jane need?

Depends. How big was it supposed to be, officially? IIRC, its size changed from issue to issue... there was a time it looked like a large container ship, but there were times it looked like a large-ish fishing vessel (less than 50 gross tonnage).

I think I'm still leaning towards the JHSV for my Joes sea vessels, but I like the idea of having a freighter with no markings, etc..

Your average "handysize" freighter designed for intercontinental shipping would probably have a crew numbering anywhere from 40 to 70 men, depending on the type of material/cargo it's carrying. You'll have ~20 men in the deck department, another ~20 men in engineering, and about 10 men in the steward's department. It'll need a much smaller crew if it's a freighter converted for military transport use, though, since the passengers (particularly any Navy sailors) can probably serve in the deck department as unlicensed hands. |
