I use Big Ben and Skymate pretty often. In fact, Marine Deadpool is making me a custom group of S.A.S. troops - Big Ben, Skymate, Action Force Flint, and Trent.
I've always been a bit enamored by Australia. I've never been, but I always thought it had so much in common with America. I would love to go someday. And so Skymate always interested me. He was a cool character and his glider was really great. Both Big Ben and Skymate are too well qualified for me not to use them. They're awesome characters. The only drawbacks for me was their uniforms. I was never crazy about Big Ben's hat or Skymate's pink hat. So I'm just glad that Marine Deadpool is making me some custom versions. I had no idea Marine Deadpool was an active duty Marine. Damn. Where does he find the time? |

I guess I'm only half aussie (dad's side, mom's is Canadian) so I never had much of a problem with Skymate. As much as I did with Quick KIck and later Nunchuk. Don't get me wrong, cool figures but why the lack of shoes? seems kinda strange for soldiers?.
As far as stereotypes, we aussies are far far guiltier at stereotyping ourselves. For awhile there was a GI JOe Australia comic which was pretty much black and white reprints of Special Missions with original framing sequences introduced by an australian soldier and Recondo dead ringer called 'Digger' Digger is an old WW2 Anzac term for a soldier. Every issue his dialogue was the corniest drivel ever written (by Dave Devries who later wrote for Valiant, Marvel and the Phantom). I half expected him to 'throw a shrimp on the barbie' every issue, it was that bad. I would like to hear more about "Digger". Is there a file card of some kind for him? Are there any Australian file cards that we could find? I would really like to see some Joe characters from Australia. Was Digger in the Australian SAS?

Thanks buddy
That's why i love coming to this thread, it's a great place to bounce ideas off others and I like to think we all learn a little bit from each other. I've actually saved a ton of stuff to a word document from all the insights you, Zulu, Troynos, Tanksmasher, Loose Cannon, Fogger, Lister, Rocky, Darkhawk75, Mike Voltz, Topside and everyone else has provided. I particularly gained a TON of insight from what you've explained about PSYOPs, women in combat, the role of Chaplains and some of the training you've done. I had no idea that Chaplains would go into combat zones with the troops. Going into a warzone with just a knife and one's faith and beliefs is pretty damn brave.

Yeah, Marine Deadpool is an Active Duty Marine at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina... He's a Gunnery Sergeant (E-7). I can't even tell you how busy this guy is. He and I have become friends, and so I know a little bit about what he does - WOW! I can't even tell y'all what he does. He's originally from Alabama, so we have a lot in common. Yeah, it's pretty cool that a real live G.I. Joe is making my custom Joes. It's like having Gung-Ho or Leatherneck making figures for me. ;)

Yeah Digger was SASR. I don't remember ever seeing a file card or anything. He was never released as a figure. All the releases were Action Force/Man from 1982-1984 then mostly US (although some had Canadian cards for some reason). The only exclusive ever offered was a GI Joe Ice cream in about 1987 or 1988. You had to send in about 10 used ice cream sticks to purchase a Fridge figure. I had about 30 and my mom let me order 3 but I got a refund and only 1 figure because they ran out of stock.
Paul Hogan is both derided and hailed depending on what he's doing at the time. Most people consider him to be a sell out for selling a false impression of what the country is about. Then again, Steve Irwin was seen the same way till he died and now he's almost considered for saint hood. Crocodile Dundee is nowhere near close to reality. There are some Bushmen with incredible tracking and survival skills but no one like Mick Dundee. It's funny that most of my cousins who live in Canada and the US all think that we have kangaroos in the back yard and there's venomous spiders and crocs everywhere. Truth be told, I had been living here for 5 years and the first Koala bear I saw in the LA Zoo! But kangaroos I see everyday. I live in an area that used to be wild so they all got forced out then started making their way back. They now inhabit the golf course down the road. They're almost roadkill over here..except roadkill that can write off your car because they can be very big and they can be very vicious. There've been a few stories of them drowning and killing neighbourhood dogs and putting a few owners in hospital too. |

But it's an additional name to use for new character.
I'd love to go to Aussie. Ireland, Scotland, Norway and Aussie are tops on my list of places to go.
