Speaking of foreign Joes, does anyone use them? I know Troy, you use Big Ben but does anyone use Skymate, Big Ben and Back Stop?

Oliver, I wanted to thank you. I've taken your Ghost Squad and tweaked it for my joe army. I'm going to use the name Ghost Squad as one of my sabre squadrons.
it'll be lead by Ghost Rider and will be the sneak and peek and intel people. It'll also be the 'funny squad' like in Delta where they have one 'funny platoon', so named because it's the only time the DOD uses female operators. My squad will have 4 troops; AC130U Spooky Gunship crew. I have the crew...just no plane...yet. Infiltration Troop (all the Ninja Force guys) Core Collection troop (Scarlett, Chuckles, etc), their job is to go into an area ahead of the operators and gather intel, lay groundwork etc..pretty much what the Intelligence Support Activity do. Then there's the recce troop. I originally intended to have Gung Ho and the force recon guys here but moved them elsewhere. The recce troop or 'Ghost Recon' are made up of the foreign joes with american names combined with Joes whose names were changed when migrating to Action Force. Like Footloose who was called 'Andrew Mackay' instead of Meyers and in some comics he was referred to as 'Long Slide' |

Skymate was slightly after my initial time as a Joe fan, so I never really thought about him too much. I've always been interested in Australians' general opinion of the character. To me, he looks like a somewhat unimaginative mish-mash of stereotypical "Aussie" features, sort of like how Quick-Kick and Budo were token East Asian Joes. The boomerang, the "mate" in his codename, the links to aboriginal tribespeople... the only things he's missing are a didgeridoo and a pet kangaroo. That being said, they're "positive sterotype" (or at worst, value-neutral) traits so to speak (at least from my point of view). But I do recall an Australian HISStanker (can't remember who) taking slight offence to Skymate's overall design.

I guess I'm only half aussie (dad's side, mom's is Canadian) so I never had much of a problem with Skymate. As much as I did with Quick KIck and later Nunchuk. Don't get me wrong, cool figures but why the lack of shoes? seems kinda strange for soldiers?.
As far as stereotypes, we aussies are far far guiltier at stereotyping ourselves. For awhile there was a GI JOe Australia comic which was pretty much black and white reprints of Special Missions with original framing sequences introduced by an australian soldier and Recondo dead ringer called 'Digger' Digger is an old WW2 Anzac term for a soldier. Every issue his dialogue was the corniest drivel ever written (by Dave Devries who later wrote for Valiant, Marvel and the Phantom). I half expected him to 'throw a shrimp on the barbie' every issue, it was that bad. |

Delta's "funny platoon" is a myth and something of a running joke in certain circles. As interesting as the concept is, it doesn't exist. Some disreputable "insider" author (can't remember who, they're so many of them) first claimed they existed in some paperback "tell-all" book several years ago, and it's developed a life of its own, being cited on numerous "special operations" websites and publications as fact.

I wanted to have all my foreign troops together at one point. I even thought of a South African Squad just so I had a reason to use all the Stalkers. But I sort of abandoned that. Skymate is one of those guys who I have but never really played with. I have him with the Airborne guys.
Backstop is an American to me just like all the Hispanic Joes born outside the US. The English guys have their own team sort of like a counter point to the Oktober Guard. So Trent, Lt Stone, Skip, Big Ben and Action Man. I sort of wish I had more. But I have the international team both US, and British with the Oktober Guard based in Europe with most of the Urban\Intelligence Joes and SHIELD (I love my Nick Fury figure). Most of the R&D is part of this team too, as they are always having to reverse engineer Cobra/MARS Tech they capture. LtGen Sharpe is the overall commander, with Commisioner Gordon as the Government liason de facto Deputy. Rey heads up the Steel Brigade with Brekov and Trent falling in behind him, and Agent Harrison Ford/Han Solo Endor as the other Government Agent attached to the team with Nick Fury as well. A lot of leadership I know, but each one has his own sphere of influence and has to interact with different foreign governments so they are in effect military attaches. |

I remember that guy. We used to get all sorts of weird reprints in my hometown's store (Spain-sourced 2000AD comics, the odd Australian GI Joe comic book, Action Force collections, Philippine reprints of X-Men and Spider-Man). I always just assumed he was the Aussie version of Recondo since I'd never seen Recondo in any of the Australian Joe comics.

Might have been him. Sometimes, I think the dubious "US special operations" paperback industry is part of an actual military misinformation/disinformation campaign. You'd be surprised how much of the stuff out there is pure fabrication written by people who've never served in the military in any capacity, and even the actual former military men-turned-authors aren't immune from embellishing their books with some fiction or using ghost-writers.
