The thing about guys like Chuck Dixon and Larry Hama is that unless they're writing expressly for the purpose of making a conscious political statement, they don't really let their personal/political views colour their comics writing, which I think is the mark of a good professional writer in the entertainment genre. I think it says something about both men's professionalism that their recent work on IDW's GI Joe is seamless, despite coming from quite disparate backgrounds in terms of politics and life experience: Hama is a Vietnam veteran, leans slightly left-of-center in terms of his politics, and has, on more than one occasion, likened superhero vigilantism to fascism; Dixon is a "comics lifer," a vocal political conservative, and is most well-known for his work on superhero comics. |

Gentlemen, sorry to interrupt the conversation, but I'm a bit excited and I thought I would share some news...
I've had the privilege of meeting Loose Cannon and Fogger1138 in person. Both of them were just as cool as you would think - great guys, and I look forward to getting to know them better in the future. Honestly, I'm continually amazed by this thread - I think everyone on here is a stand-up guy. I can't say that for all the Tankers, but the guys on this thread are the best. In fact, earlier tonight I told my wife that y'all were "the greatest minds in all of Joe fandom". She laughed and said we should teach a college course on G.I. Joe. Anyway, tomorrow I may have the opportunity to meet with another Tanker in person: my friend and customizer, Marine Deadpool. As you may already know, he's an Active Duty Marine and he's up in Virginia for training. We're hoping to meet up while he's here. It will be great to get to meet him in person, and I imagine we'll talk about the ODA Team - and I'm excited about that. Just wanted to let you guys know... It would be great if we could all get together some time. Loose and Fogger are really awesome guys. I imagine we would all get along very well and have a lot of fun. We're all on Hisstank, and this thread specifically, a lot. And I've come to think of all the regulars on here as good friends. That seems funny considering I've never met many of you in person, but after all this time, I feel like I know y'all pretty well. Anyway. That's all I wanted to say.

Same here. I don't really pay much mind to comics writers' and artists' political views and/or personal beliefs when appreciating their non-political work, unless it starts negatively affecting the quality of their output (like, say, Frank Miller's work in the past decade and a half).

Agreed 100% In another thread someone said he can't stand Hama and has no respect for him now becuase of comments Hama has made about the old comics (the quality of 'em) and his support of RoC.

Backstop
But it's iffy if he was just born there and then moved to the states as a kid. Unlike some of the foreign Joes, Big Ben and Skymate come to mind, Backstop was never given a Canadian military record or training that would indicate he was "on loan" like Big Ben.

Yeah I'd like to go. I haven't been to a joecon or any convention yet. It could be fun if a bunch of us meet up there.

I'll be there in spirit
the time Joecon is on is the same time things will get crazy busy at work. I'll be moving from where I am in Canberra (Australian capital) to Melbourne (2nd biggest city in Oz) for almost 2 years. Not as radical a move as Loose to Moscow but not looking forward to not being able to make my joes with me... Oliver, I know what you man about other threads. If it wasn't for the filecards, Zulu's and now Troy and Darth Henning's I wouldn't bother logging on. I was hoping all the negativity on this site would have petered out by now but not so. I also hate being told that my opinions count for less because I don't live in the continental US. I gave up posting on a few threads because of this. |
