That's great. That's how I'd see the Joes using the artillery. Setting up a temporary firebase as the missions dictate.

Wasn't there an issue where they were in Sierra Gordo, and the Thunderclap played a part?
Joe Artillery has always been a little elusive for me. I don't know a ton about Artillery to begin with, but I use the Rolling Thunder, the Thunderclap, and the Slugger. The SLAM and the Wolverine have always seemed like good Air Defense Artillery vehicles to me. Man the only thing that has gotten worse than the filecards are the blueprints. |

I don't think the SLAM or the Wolverine are Air Defense. Although I use the Wolverine as Air Defense, Which it's not, I'm confused about the SLAM. The fact that it has a target acquisition computer sounds like anti-Aircraft to me. Although the name Strategic Long-Range Artillery Machine sounds like Artillery to me.
Never really a fan of the Joe vehicles, myself, though, except maybe for the VAMP and the AWE Striker, and the Dreadnok Thunder Machine and Cobra Stinger. |

I like to make all the tracked vehicles travel together as the Armor team to spearhead an all out assault. So grouped around the MCC, and two battle bunkers and 7 Armadillos plus the Equalizer, Sky Sweeper and a Wolverine for Air Defense, my Joe Armor Assault squadron:
MOBAT Mauler Raider Brawler MOBAT Patriot Grizzley Barely seems like enough of a squadron, but there are hardly enough guys to man these vehicles. |

Personally, I've always thought that the Joe vehicles were pretty much used arbitrarily, since most of them (particularly the ones that came out post-1985) aren't really on the same level of realism as the figures. The SLAM's an example... I think it was described as an anti-aircraft weapon in the fold-out catalogue that came with the boxed vehicles, but it's pretty apparent that its array of cannons are composed of smooth-bore type weapons more associated with field artillery.

Yeah, the HAVOC was one of the first vehicles I got a kid but it's just so damn impractical. Played with it lots when I was a kid though.

About the SLAM, yeah I think it was advertised as an Air-Defense machine. But it's not that big of a difference - in the Army, there are 2 types of Artillery: Field Artillery (FA), and Air Defense Artillery (ADA). It doesn't seem so implausible that the Joes, being a very small, specialized unit, would need to combine those branches into one vehicle like the SLAM.

I loved how Hama even made fun of the HAVOC in the comic - The main guns won't traverse without turning the entire vehicle. Crazy.

I only remember the SLAM in one comic. I wonder what vehicle saw the most time in the Marvel Run? Awe Striker? WHALE? VAMP? I'd say the Tomahawk. I think the HAVOC only appeared in a couple of comics. The first one it was introduced and I believe it was part of Pysche-Outs armor unit during the Invasion of Cobra Island.
