I don't ever let personal likes/dislike of a character make a determination in these kind of Versus threads.
The only way to look at them is objectively, taking into account all the positives and negatives of the characters. Batman gets the edge over SE and it's because of his mind. Like you, I'm trying to deal with the issue objectively. I'll be interested to read what you think.

Well why not just list pros and cons here. Not necessarily for debate sake but just for a simple comparison/contrast. What does SE have that Batman doesn't and vice versa?

I don't agree or disagree Troynos, but Snake-Eyes is a black belt in 12 styles of Martial arts. Plus Batman has got his ass handed to him before.
Although has anyone ever taken off Batman's mask? That to me is the sure sign of defeat for a Superhero. Snake-Eyes has been captured and tortured a few times. |

I'm saying that Batman and SE are equals on the martial arts abilities. But I think Batman has adapted more unorthodox and different fighting styles to his arsenal where SE is just a straight up martial artist.

As for what historical figure inspired the General Flagg name... I always thought that "Flagg" was sort of a nod to "Bragg" (as in Civil War General Braxton Bragg). Heck, Braxton Bragg even had a ship named after him (the USS General Braxton Bragg), which sort of parallels the USS Flagg name scheme. Just my two cents. |

Well, the thing is the "Longstreet" middle name was only added after Hama stopped writing the filecards (post-1991 or so). In the early comics, the General Flagg who founded the Joe team, the one who was retroactively re-named as James Longstreet Flagg II after the 1992 Battle Corps figure of his son ("James Longstreet Flagg III) came out, was always referred to as James Lawrence Flagg. The second General Flagg never appeared in the comics, so I don't know if in the "comics-verse" Hama would have renamed him James Lawrence Flagg II (it's just one of those toy/comic discrepancies, sort of how like Payload was a black dude in the original Marvel comics, but was a redheaded white dude in toy form).
If you look at General Bragg's actual military record, it's pretty amazing that he ever had anything named after him. I mean, he's got a huge base, and a ship named after him and for what? Being a terrible Confederate General... that's about all he ever accomplished. So I don't know if I'd think of Braxton Bragg and General Flagg the same way just because their names rhyme.

Yeah, Troynos and I just disagree about Batman and Snake-Eyes. I'm satisfied to leave it at that. I'll tell you what, though. If they ever do fight, and Batman wins, I'll be happy to concede the point.

Oh, I'm not thinking of ascribing Bragg's qualities to Flagg. Just suggesting that the naming scheme was inspired by Bragg's. In certain languages, the letters "r" and "l" are allophones (it means they're basically interchangeable). One of those languages is Japanese, Hama's second language (he's a third-generation Japanese-American). In Old English, "f" and "v" were traditionally allophones. And in certain other languages, "v" and "b" are allophones. So the phonemic transition from "Bragg" to "Vragg" to "Flagg" is, from a linguistics standpoint, somewhat logical. Not saying that Hama thought of the naming scheme that way, but given how phonemic relationships are hardwired in the human brain to some extent, I think in trying to come up with a variation on "Bragg," it's certainly within the realm of possibility that "Flagg" would be one of the first he'd come up with. Yeah, it is odd. I can understand the first Fort Bragg (in California) being named after him, since it was named that during his pre-Civil War career campaigning against Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War (where he was successful, if not particularly well-liked by his men and fellow officers).

Zulu, you're a world of information, my friend. Weird info, but very informative. Thanks for the etymology lesson, buddy. ;)
