Okay, here's something that I don't think's been tackled in this thread. What do you guys make of the "extra" Joes on the vehicle card art/stickers?
For example, on the box art of the original Skystriker, Ace's co-pilot is called "Lieutenant Wayne Ruthel" (on a different thread, it was mentioned that this was a nod to "Wayne Luther," a Hasbro employee at the time). On the original Skyhawk, there's a cockpit sticker that says "Lt. Frederick Bama" (in Pablo Hidalgo's GI Joe vs Cobra: The Essential Guide, he writes that Lt. Bama invented the tilt-rotor mechanism for the Skyhawk, although I'm guessing that Bama was probably a Hasbro employee). And on the 1989 Night Boomer, there's a cockpit sticker that says "Capt. Bob Sirrom" (just a wild guess here, but I bet that's a nod to a Hasbro employee named "Robert Morris"). Are there other examples of these "secret" Joes making it onto vehicle decal sheets, stickers, and box art? |

That's interesting, Zulu, so would you recommend Hidalgo's book? It seems like you've found a lot of interesting tidbits in it.

One thing many people who've read the book take issue with is the fact that Hidalgo combined major elements of the Sunbow, DIC, Sgt. Savage, and Sigma Six cartoons with the Marvel and DDP comics and presents them as part of a continuous and linear series of events (no surprise there, Hidalgo's job at LucasArts is basically to organize and make sense of all the different film, comic book, novel, and video game versions of the Star Wars mythos). Personally, I don't mind this as I know enough background information to be able to parse the animated stuff from the comic book stuff so I like being able to see the events of the cartoons and the comics arranged in some sort of chronological fashion, but this makes it look like a disjointed and hodge-podge collection of unrelated events at certain points, particularly when it comes to Cobra Commander's character history... in my mind, there's just no way to neatly reconcile the Cobra-La stuff with the more grounded origin Hama wrote for the character. And Falcon's history is a mess... apart from the main stuff from the original 1987 filecard, it mentions his being Duke's half-brother (from the 1987 GI Joe animated movie, although it's never mentioned in any of his filecards or in the comics and is pretty much ignored by most fans), his addiction to spark (from that hilarious DIC cartoon episode), but oddly omits any mention of the (very salient, in my mind) fact that he was originally part of a "dummy" GI Joe team being used by a couple of corrupt Pentagon officials to safeguard a stolen nuclear weapon (GI Joe #60) and his role as the leader of the unfortunate Joe team that got massacred in Trucial Abysmia (GI Joe #s108 & 109). Anyway, that's just a long way of saying that it's a neat book to have if you can get it at below cover price ($25), but outside of a few obscure details, there's probably not a lot there that a lifetime fan of ARAH doesn't already know, and the presentation (an occasionally haphazard mix of the cartoon and comic book histories) may not be to your liking. It omits Falcon's leadership of the TA Joes because Duke is there as well and is the mission sarge under Falcon. Doesn't jive with Duke being the "leader" in other stuff.
Just my thoughts. As for the names on the cockpits. I never understood that. From one standpoint it made me want figures made of those guys and on the other... what'st he point of codenames if going to paint the real names on the side of the aircraft? At least now I have some file names for new Joe pilots.

I sort of doubt it. Even long-time Joe fans, I think, forget about (or are completely unaware of) Marine Lieutenant Stone from GI Joe Extreme or SAS Lieutenant Cedric Stone from GI Joe Sigma Six. Heck, I'd totally forgotten about GI Joe Extreme's Lt. Stone until I found YoJoe.com a few years ago and stumbled on their GI Joe Extreme page. I Agree. I'm just saying he just got an overview and incorporated everything. Maybe Pablo was a consultant on this one too. Both versions are named Lt Stone though? Then to go Sgt Stone to maybe add Sgt Slaughter? Quote:

There would have to be multiple figures made, but guys like Grand Slam have always been E-5. Clutch as well has remained an E-4, as well as Breaker. |

Poor Ambush is an E-3, and he's still the lowest ranking Joe.
