When the Marvel series started, the unit was secret, but the soldiers weren't. They were members of the motor pool at the Chaplain's Assistants School. I don't remember what the cover unit was after they moved the Pitt to AZ. I think they make up a unit on paper for accountimg purposes that way they can still get paid and be on the promotion boards.

In my 'verse, the joes cover is that of a Special Forces Support Battalion (kinda like the logistics study unit that it's the TV show 'The Unit')
Btw, has anyone seen the POC Arctic Doc?. He kinda looks like Adv team to me...thinking of buying a few to make some Adv team figures. I think Shipwreck's head on that body would make a cool Colton. I know the GI Joe club is making some but I can get a head start |

I can imagine the Joes having a similar system in place, and it can go a long way towards explaining why Stalker was an E-5 for so long. |

In the Australian SASR that's exactly what happens. When a soldier successfully passes selection, he joins one of the 3 troops as a trooper and has to work their way back up. This may seem harsh because a Sgt can have a huge pay drop by being 'demoted' back to trooper status but due to all the extra financial benefits they end up making more money than having stayed as a Sgt. The cycle is about 3 years. 1 training, 1 ready reserve and 1 active where they're ready to be deployed at a moment's notice.

The SAS/SASR system sort of makes sense in the IDW comics context of the Joes being a top-secret unit. If everybody on the team is legally dead anyway, a relative rank system would work just as well as an absolute rank system in providing a framework for command hierarchy.

Oh but that would take all the fun out of it! Although I see your point that would make the most sense. Do Officers get outranked but Troopers?

I wonder how much the different units at Ft Bragg intermingle? The Rangers are there the Green Berets are there and Delta is there. Do these Guys typically cross paths? At the NCO club at the Laundro-mat? At Piggly Wiggly? Particularly if say both Delta and the Green Berets are recruiting from the Rangers, then everyone must know a guy in one or the other.
BAMM 1000 Pages! Special Forces is Headquartered at Bragg, and 3rd and 7th Groups are there. There is a lot of intermingling between them. They hang out at the Green Beret Bar on Post. I've been there; it's pretty neat. Delta keeps to themselves. They don't mix and mingle. They look like civilian workers on base. Most of the Special Ops people (Psy Ops, Civil Affairs, Spec Ops Support) all mix very well. It's a community. Special Forces is around, and they're usually really cool with everyone. It's not a big community, so if you've been there long enough, everyone knows everyone.

I like the idea, the only problem would be how do they get paid. Their pay would be based on rank, I guess they could be paid out of a black ops account and a false identity bank account. If they don't exist whilst they're joes, what happens when they leave/retire?
Maybe they have a special dispensation to be paid via captured cobra funds? kinda like a self funding model based on seized assets? then again there'd be all sorts of legal and jurisdictional hurdles involved there too...sigh

I think that the guy writing the filecard doesn't care and knows nothing about the characters. Why I don't know? They probably get an old filecard and don't realize the character has been promoted at some point. Thus the drops in Ranks at times. Such as Gung-Ho. AS far as Charbroil as a Warrant Officer, those TRU sets are riddled with all sorts of packaging errors.
For me since I pretty much know what the highest ranks achieved on filecards I use the highest, except in the case of Rock'n'Roll. I just don't see him as a Sgt Major. I may change my mind if I decide he's Bench-Press' Uncle. I also tend to follow the DDP ranks that were published in their Battle Files comic. This tends to coincide with how I feel about some of the more major characters having a more appropriate rank. So for instance: Beachhead is a Sgt Major, but he's never got higher than E-7 on a filecard. Stalker is E-9 as well but he only made E-8 on a filecard. Scarlett is a E-8 in DDP but only an E-6 on a filecard. Thanks to Zulu I know have her as a WO-3. Steeler ard Cutter are now 0-4 Falcon is now a Captain Spirit, Recondo, and Roadblock are all E-7, which is what they should be. Ace is listed as 0-6 but that is a little high for me, so I keep him as a Major. The only other thing I've done is Promote Torpedo to 0-3 since he is listed as Lt. Torpedo these days I use Rock 'n Roll as a Sergeant Major. He's not on any sub-team that I use (Sonic Fighters), so I use him as the SGM of my "regular" Joe Army. He works for Gen Flagg.

So I'm working Indiana Jones into my Joeverse, since the Joes now have a the DoJ arm and I'm already using the old Secret Society for the Coils...
I figure Henry "Indiana" Jones was a war buddy of Coltons, may or may not have been part of Coltons original Joe team, back during Viet Nam (yeah, I'm bringing Indy forward in time but still keeping him aged). So after 'Nam and between the formation of the new Joe team, Jones became Dr. Jones and started his archealogy career and along the way his old war buddy Colton joined him (and thus we get the Adventure Team adventures). Then Colton was tapped to run the new Joe team and as more and more was found out about the Society of the Coiled Serpent, Colton brought in Indy as a consultant.
