Is it wrong to...

Ok, just a little question for all the creative people out there...

Is it wrong that I save people's art from here and use them in these ways:

*Black and White prints that people make on here, I print them out and let my kids color them in.

*I've saved a lot of peoples charactor art and messed around with them in microsoft paint, just for fun. I don't ever try to claim them as mine and I don't try to sell them.

The reason I ask is because I don't have enough skill to draw like the people on here. It's not like I can go to the store and pick my kids up a g.i. joe coloring book anymore and they have so much fun coloring them and cutting them out. In my defense, I use Paint on the pictures I save just to see what the charactor would look like in a different colored outfit or with different features.

I've been torn over this for a while. I don't really see how it's any different than using a casted part rather than a real one, for your own personal use. Also, you always see people say,"that's a sweet custom, I'm gonna use that idea".

What do you guys think? I would provide an example of the paint thing, but I am going to p.m. the person that I got it from first and see if they agree to it.

I don't think it's plagiarism because I'm not trying to make gain off it.

Am I a huge jerk face or is this perfectly harmless?

I don't see any problems with that - actually a pretty good idea as far as the coloring book goes.

Good, cuz I'm not trying to steal anyone's money by doing this. I'm either just having fun or letting my kids have fun. As a customizer, if someone wanted to make a custom like mine, but a bit different, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I guess it's not a big deal.

So long as you're not trying to sell it or pass it off as your own original work, I don't see a problem.

Yeah man, don't worry about it.

If you're it's just for personal use, it's not crossing any artist ethical line at all.

Look at all the people on here who have other artist's work for their avatars. It's all in good fun.

Anyone saying anything otherwise is being an obtuse ass about it.

Awesome!

You should start a Thread for this purpose. I'm sure a lot of us have kids or will.

can you post examples of your tweaks?

Some people might be fine with it, others not so much.

Printing out existing lineart for your kids to color seems a lot less insulting than modifying a person's existing character/designs, too.

I guess I just say that flashing back to places like Deviant art, and all the shitty Sonic "original characters, please do not steal" that someone raped with the paint bucket tool, and added a bunch of crap to.

Though on the other hand, a lot of people these days create "base" figures for people to use and alter as they like.

As long as you're not claiming it for your own (which, as you said you aren't doing anyway) you're fine.
