86 because that's when that's when i walked into Toys R' Us one day and saw wet-suit on the side-aisle. I was like, who the hell is that?! So when i checked the rest of the hanging gems and checked the back of the file cards, I quickly got a throbbing sensation at seeing new figures! Cobra eels WOW! dial-tone WOAH! BATS.. HOLY!!!
Then 87 came around with nes and a new era had begun. action figures cut off for the next few years.
"That's an even longer story... they're someplace where brave men are needed, badly."

85 no doubt about it. The absolute definitive year for joes.

85. but i love 83 and 84 and 86 as well. but for me it was a toss up between 85 and 84. all those years had great characters, but 85 had a flood of them--flint, shipwreck, bbq, airtight, alpine, dreadnoks.

I think '83-'85 were the years where GI Joe did no wrong and was at the top of it's game. I voted for 1984. Duke, Zartan, Hooded CC, Roadblock, Scrap Iron, Baroness, Blowtorch, Cutter, Copperhead, Rip Cord, Deep Six, Wild Weasel, Firefly, Storm Shadow, Recondo, Mutt and Spirit. 'Nuff said. 1985 was a really solid year, but '85 doesn't quite have the perfection that 1984 has to me.

I'd have to say 86' because that's when a few of the dreadnoks and especially the b.a.t.s came out too awesome year from me when i was a kid.

Like most people I voted for 1985. That was when the comic, the cartoon, and everything was most popular.
My personal favorite year was 1984, though.
1987 knocked me out of Joes as a child. How Hasbro went from Firefly, Storm Shadow and Scrap-Iron to Croc Master, Raptor and Crystal Ball in three years blew my mind. I did get back in briefly in 1988 with the Iron Grenadiers and then Joe got basically abandoned by me 'til TRU came out with those ARAH COBRA Infantry sets and that sucked me back in. Several thousand dollars and hundreds of action figures later, here I am...

This was a tough one for me. 86 was the last "great" year for joes in my mind. Some very memorable characters and vehicles. As far as the pinnacle, however, 85 hands down! Between the toys, comic books, cartoons and my age the stars aligned. In 84/85 I was in 6th grade. 85/86 I started junior high and joes were replaced by sk8 boards, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Punk and chicks. 7th grade I turned into a completely different kid. Sigh, GOOD TIMES!

I'd say 85 was the peak of Joe toys and 86 was the peak of it's popularity. After that the popularity began to fade. Many of us hit our teen years during this time and began focusing on the fairer sex. I know I did, even though i still bought figures up to 89.
