i haven't seen this at retail stores, but i see it everyday in peoples homes. i remodel homes for a living so i get to see how kids act in their natural habitats all over the city. a lot of the parents are great to work with, but i have to admit, some, er, a lot of the parents are lacking parenting skills. though i don't have kids myself, seeing these mutations make me want to keep it that way.
some of these parents let their trophy kids get away with whatever they want, it's scary. not to mention their football kickable co-dependent barking dogs that screech like michael jackson. they are coddled and just as well-unbehaved as their kids. sometimes, you can tell how children are going to act as adults by the way their parents raise and train their animals. |

not with my kids. i'd drag them by thier arm out of the store before giving in to behavior like that. they know it's not an idle threat either as i've picked them up over my shoulder and carried them out of the store kicking and screaming before. that doesn't happen anymore as a result.

it's very effective. kids have to know that thier actions result in consequences. a=b. good behavior gets them a toy, bad behavior gets them a trip home with nothing and the rest of the day in thier room. equally important is reinforcing the reason behind it. they have to know and understand they caused the response. i go so far as to tell me why they ended up in thier room with nothing. the first couple times it's ofcourse my fault but they catch on and in no time they will tell you the truth. kids are not stupid (most aren't anyway) and are certainly capable of reasoning. they do it all the time amongst themselves bartering for toys, games, etc. you have to relate is all.
i'm not concerened with being my kids best friend. if i do my job right, that will come naturally. it's far more important that they know and understand i'm thier parent. i see way to many parents trying very hard to be thier friends and abdicating parenting as a result. be a good parent and your already thier friend. parenting... it starts with the parents, bottom line.

The problem here is DISCRETION-ever see the scene in GoodFellas where they tazed the guy at the card table who was cheating the casino? No one even saw it happen. That's what needs to happen here.
As far as NOT taking kids into a toy store-we go SOOOOOO often that my daughter could care less. My son is quickly becoming the same way. When you never take them, they don't know how to conduct themselves-it becomes sensory overload for them and they act out. Tasers-I am such a big fan of tasers. |
