i absolutely hated flint and lady jaye, still do. those two demanded more air time on the cartoon than was necessary. fortunately, the comic didn't use them as core characters. flint, mr captain of the football team and his jock girlfriend groupie, L J, lame.

The problem with the Flint thing is they just should have made him an officer. A warrant officer is never out there leading troops; he's a technical expert in a specific field, and the only time you see them commonly leading troops is on a helicopter crew.
Even so, Duke is the First SGT. An 01 and 02 outrank him on paper, but the First SGT is really the top dog next to the commander of a company. Flint is in Special Forces, and on a Special Forces "A-Team" consisting of 12 men, it is lead by a Captain and a Warrant Officer serves as the Team's X-O. When the "A-Team" splits, which can happen often, the Warrant takes command of the Bravo Team. It would have been fine for Flint to have been an officer, but I don't think anyone in the Army would consider a Special Forces Chief to be a desk jockey. As for Duke being a 1SG, that's fine for a company sized element, but Duke really should have been a Sargent Major to be the NCOIC for the whole unit... but even then, he would have been more effective as a Major or a Captain. All in all, I just think that there are far too few Officers in Combat Arms within G.I. Joe. And why are there NO Marine Corps Officers?

I think Tall Creeper makes a lot of sense. Besides, it's not like Hawk's got 4 stars. He was a brigadier general. He wasn't quite like Flagg. Also, Duke is not the answer to the need for a "field commander". It's always good to have a 1SGT, but a unit needs an officer to Lead. A good Captain (Grid-Iron, Claymore, Psyche-Out) or a Senior LT (Falcon) would be a more logical and appropriate choice... even a good Warrant Officer like Flint, Wild Bill, or Torpedo would make more sense than placing all command authority to an NCO, even a senior NCO.

There are a lot of Airborne Rangers on the Joe Team Stalker, Hawk, Duke, Roadblock, Flint, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Scarlett*, Lady Jaye*, Beach-Head, Muskrat, Tunnel Rat, Hit & Run, Repeater, Free Fall, Skydive, Dart, Outback, Captain Grid-Iron, Claymore, Starduster, Rampage, Wild Bill, and probably Low-Light and Recondo. *the U.S. Army does NOT allow women to go through Ranger School in real life

Quick Kick, he's a re-hashed stereotypical knock off of Bruce Lee, but goofy.

Let me explain further, A man joins the Army and wants to be in the Airborne Infantry (82nd Airborne, or 173rd Airborne). He would go to basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC or Ft. Benning, GA. Then he would attend AIT-I (Advanced Individual Training - Infantry) with an MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) of 11-B (Rifleman) or 11-C (Mortarman). Then the soldier would attend Airborne School at Ft. Benning. At that point, the Soldier is Airborne Infantry qualified and can serve in any regular Airborne Infantry Unit (like the 82nd Airborne) and would wear a Maroon Beret - the distinguishing mark of an Airborne Soldier. Most enlisted Airborne Infantrymen are trained at this level. Some will go on to the 10 day Air Assault School for Helicopter Assault training, but that is about it. They will train with their unit, and work at becoming a proficient Airborne Infantryman. Ranger School is for the Brave and the Bold. Each unit in the Army is prescribed a certain number of "Ranger school Slots" to award to members of the unit. These slots are usually merit based, and go to more senior soldiers, or extremely promising soldiers who have done something to earn it. Officers are a different story. Ranger School, like Airborne, is voluntary and Airborne School is a prerequisite for Ranger School. So, where you can be Airborne qualified without having ever thought about becoming a Ranger, you cannot be a Ranger without first being Airborne qualified. There are a lot of excellent Airborne Infantrymen who have not had the opportunity to attend Ranger School. Consequently, they are not Airborne Rangers. Joe team members like "Airborne" and "Rip Cord" and even "Spirit" and possibly "Low-Light" seem to be examples of this very set of circumstances. Ranger School qualifies the graduate to wear the Ranger tab. It's basically a combat leadership school in advanced Infantry tactics. There is the 75th Ranger Regiment, that falls under Special Operations Command, it is basically the best Airborne Infantry Regiment in the world (Though the British Paras would probably argue this point) and it's members wear a tan beret to distinguish them as members of this elite Regiment. These guys are mostly Ranger qualified (though some of the newer, younger members are waiting to go to Ranger School) and they are basically a unit of Advanced/highly proficient Airborne Infantrymen. These guys are a unit of "Airborne Rangers" rather than a unit of regular "Airborne Infantrymen", but again, it's just one Regiment. So, for example, Stalker and Beach-Head are Airborne Rangers - they have been to Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger School. And Because Beach-Head served as a Lane Instructor at Ranger School, we know he served in the 3rd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Airborne and Rip Cord have been to Infantry and Airborne School, but have not been through Ranger School. Similar qualifications and mission focus, but not as advanced as Beach-Head and Stalker. Roughly speaking, U.S. Marines and the regular Airborne Infantry (82nd Airborne) are fairly comparable. Both have similar Physical Fitness Requirements and Standards and operate is comparable numbers of troop strength. The Rangers would be more elite than either the regular Airborne or the Marine Corps. Officers are different. Every Infantry Officer is expected to go through Ranger School. Any Infantry Officer who does not have a Ranger Tab is considered to be suspect. With an Infantry Officer, if he has a Ranger Tab, it's just normal... if he doesn't, people wonder, "what went wrong?" For this reason, any Infantry Officer who was good enough to get selected for the G.I. Joe Team, should be assumed to have his Ranger Tab. Captain Grid-Iron, Colonel Courage, and Gen. Flagg are all examples of this principle. Falcon, as a Green Beret is another... Over 60% of all Special Forces soldiers are Ranger Qualified - it's that important. Rangers Lead the Way.
