My brother and I always arranged our File Cards, by rank, by branch of Service, by MOS... all of it. We memorized the file cards and quizzed each other on them. We organized by Specialty: These guys were Ranger qualified, these guys were Airborne Infantry, these guys were Regular Infantry, these guys were Marines, these were SEALs. You get the idea. Then we looked at rank within each unit. We took it pretty seriously - probably because we were Army brats. Duke being a 1Sgt doesn't always make sense... other Joes are Sgt. Majors, which is a higher ranking NCO, and Functionally, Duke works more like the Top NCO of the whole G.I. Joe team - which would be like a Sgt. Major, and not just a Company 1Sgt. I still use my own rank structure. I developed my own Chain of Command Chart - yes, it's an actual chart I use as a reference because there are so many characters ;) . My collection is extensive, so I have everyone in there - all the figures - and rank matters: Colonel Courage and Capt. Gridiron too. Keel Haul is in Charge of all Naval Ops, and Payload is in charge of Air Power, but Hawk is the Commander in Chief of the whole Operation. Duke is my working Sgt. Major and Flint is the Warrant Officer for General Hawk and works with Duke as Hawk's right and left hands. I even use General Colton as my head of Special Operations/Intelligence (Tiger Force, Night Force, Sky Patrol, etc.) For all the posts I've done, I haven't listed my least favorite character... Quick-Kick. What the heck? Bar-B-Q and Airtight, looked weird, but we did need a fireman and a chemical specialist. Quick-Kick? bare feet? No Shirt? What, We didn't have enough martial artists? His background and qualifications were "Hollywood Stuntman"... I would rather have had Colt Seavers/Lee Majors from "The Fallguy" as part of the G.I. Joe team. Quick-Kick, in my opinion, is worthless and I was glad when Hama killed him off.

I don't think they ever made a big deal out of it, like Marvel did. I can't think of any of the top of my head, which means they did it the right way. It shouldn't be a huge deal, know what I mean? Just like if a character is african-american or caucausin, hetero or gay, it doesn't matter.
They do have some lesbians. I know that Grace and Thunder, from the Outsiders, are a couple. Although technically Grace is bisexual, since she has been known to fool around with Red Arrow. Pied Piper (Flash villain) was probably their oldest character they made gay. Even with the DC speedsters and their baddies among my faves, that wasn't as much a sock to the nose as Electro in Marvel. Anyway, back on subject... Rocky was never popular IN GI Joe, but the attempt to include him scars me. *laugh* Anyway, disqualifying him... I'd say Sgt. Slaughter. He represents the ushering in of the repeated jimmy-kicking demise of GI Joe. |

There's a scene in the cartoon that shows the command structure.
It's on a screen behind Hawk. Had Hawk, then Duke/Flint/Beach Head and someone else, then others underthem. Wish I could remember which episode. Oh well, since I'm rewatching them all, I'll get to it eventually. The scene in the ASA episode where Beachhead says "Things would be different if I were in charge,", Flint responds to him that it's Hawk, then Duke, then Flint, and then Beachhead. |

Yep. I don't think he was suppose to be gay at all (becase he was a pacifist doesn't mean he is gay...and his attire was not that outlandish considering it was 1986. Flint looked just as funny in his civilian attire in the cartoon, it was just the style of the times). I thought his character was actually a refreshing change for the Joe team because he was so adamant against using harmful force (yeah, it doesn't make much sense for a military man, I know).
BTW, Doc was also an extreme pacifist as well (at least according to his file card). I think the medic characters were both written as soldiers who only joined the military to help people who were ill and injured or dying, not because they wanted to fight for their country or fight against evil.

Wasn't Gung-Ho suppose to be ranked really high, too?
I guess he was a Gunnery Sergeant.

Lifeline ordering them to use non-violent methods, lol. When was Electro outed? The original Hawk and Dove is dead, I think Dove died long before the whole "make characters gay" trend. They were brothers.
