I was in Target looking a while back when the vehicles were just starting to pop up I saw a kid maybe 10 with a VAMP and a single figure in his hands walking with his mother so yes kids do like these toys.

This saddens me. At such a young age, we couldn't really comprehend the realities of war. To us it was Good Guys vs. bad Guys. Real simple. Good and evil. Unfortunately, for kids now days that line has been blurred. Unless the "EVIL" character is some disfigured mutant beast, then he may not truly be evil. To have other humans (soldiers) be the evil element would be labeling someone and create certain prejudices and judgments on a society that may be simply different. It's all PC nonsense! Joe went after Cobra because Cobra was BAD and needed to be stopped by the heros. Kids don't need to be worrying about collateral damage or all the political bull$hit involved in real war. They just need to worry about identifying evil and stopping it. WE did it with He-man, we did it with MASK, we did it with Star Wars, and we did it with GIJOE. Boys should be allowed to do it today.
Boys have it the worst. There is a feminization of boys going on in American society today that is screwing with their male nature and will eventually make for generations of really screwed up adult men. Boys aren't allowed to be interested in "BOY" things anymore (okay, maybe a few sports but thats about it). Their High energy is suppressed with drugs, TV, and internet rather than roughhousing and activity. When I was a kid, Cops, Firemen, and soldiers were something to aspire to be but today these kind of "heroic" titles are being shunned because parents don't want "lil Johnny" to get hurt or killed or get involved in a possible war they might not politically agree with. Just because a kid likes to play soldier doesn't mean he's going to grow up to be one. I played Joe like a madman as a kid but never joined the military and I am willing to bet that most of the folks on this forum didn't either. I do however have a huge respect for our volunteer service men and women in the armed forces and realize that we all owe them a huge debt for making such a huge sacrifice to defend us all. Many of them probably played GIJOE as kids but I doubt getting that Vamp for their birthday when they were 6 had any bearing on their decision to join-up later in life. As for actually seeing kids buying Joes in the store. I have yet to see one. It is pretty sad. On a side note. Parent's do let their kids get into things like Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh! Isn't that just cock-fighting and gambling with cute critters? Just a thought. Quote:
GI Joe needs a cartoon made for kids on TV. Without that I don't think kids today will ever really know who or what GI Joe is. The movie could bring kids to the line but all they will know is the movie and I am thinking it's not going to be anything like the GI Joe we know and love. I think a GI Joe cartoon aimed at kids like the one we grew up with in the 80's is the key to bringing in kids.

1st off, no I haven't read all the post in this thread so the following has probably been mentioned:
I never noticed, but now that it's mentioned. No I have not seen a kid checking out Joes. Probably because the kids don't know who they are with no widespread supporting media in current rotation. Like Transformers had with the movie, and now the new cartoon series. I frequently hear "OHHHH! It's Ratchet! Look Mom it's ratchet! He's a Transformer! His name is Ratchet! See? Look he's an ambulance!" Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm sure I was no different when I was a young pup. I'll tell you what I do hear a lot that bugs the hell out of me: "No you can't have that toy Christopher. It has a gun, you know you're not allowed to have any violent toys." Is it me or would banning exposue to "violent toys" really just glamourize it? Y'know the whole you want what you can't have mentality? Therefore driving the kids to seek it somewhere else, like let's say, actual violence? Or perhaps GI Joe is the cataclysm to the downfall of society. Going outside to play is far to dangerous for the young'uns. Have them sit and watch TV instead, even while sitting in the back seat of a car (stupidest thing I've ever seen.... grumble grumble...). I have actually seen quite a few kids express interest in GI Joe over the years, be it the VvV, Sigma 6, and, yes, the 25th RAH lines as well as StarWars and IndianaJones lines. The Halloween costumes and accessories that sold out the fastest this year: Indy and Clone Trooper which segues back to the comment about so called war toys... I've seen the same people that complain about war toys one month but are pulling their hair out looking for a cap gun, rifle or tommy gun at Halloween...

I saw a kid the other day inspecting the Joe line and told his dad "Hey look dad, it's a Ninja... I want it for Christmas!" I thought it was kinda cool he wanted that Wave 1 Storm Shadow Revision. He had a smile from ear to ear.

I took my son to buy some after he saw his uncle's collection and I got inspired to get back into it. I have seen a few kids checking them out as well when I have been in the Joe isles

My nephew saw me messing with my Joes and begged his dad to buy him some. My brother took him to KayBee and was going to buy him a few until he saw that they were 10 bucks each. LOL. So my nephew ended up getting a single Snow Serpent. Which he soon got tired of playing with and gave to me as a present. My evil plan has worked. LOL. |
