I've just personally never been attracted to a random person rating items arbitrarily which in no way effects the actual condition of the item. Yet somehow this rating which has no basis in reality (a MISB item in which the toy itself does not receive a rating of 100) increases the value of the item 10 fold.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks is what I say.
Still, the AFA reminds me of a conversation I had with my father many, many years ago (may he rest in peace) when we were arguing about why I wanted a Polo Ralph Lauren shirt.
This is STUPID!!! I AM NOT GOING TO PAY $75 FOR A $10 SHIRT WITH A STUPID LITTLE HORSE ON IT!!!
But Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad, you don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand. This is what the other kids wear and they make fun of meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eee.
Well then I guess you're just going to get made fun of then because there is no way on God's green earth I am paying $65 for a little horsey on your shirt. Let me tell you sumthin' about basic economics: This shirt is made in the same sweatshop factory as a shirt you can get at Wal-Mart and they just put different tags on it and sell this one for $75 to idiots who have to have that little horsey on it. If somebody wants to be your friend or not be your friend because you do or don't have a little horsey on your shirt THEN YOU ARE STUPID FOR WANTING TO BE FRIENDS WITH THEM AT ALL!
Sigh. I still have a closet full of Ralph Lauren shirts to this day. I should have insisted Dad be buried in one. That would have been a kick. RIP Papa San.

If you're going to sell your items and you can be sure of a certain grade, go for it. If not, it's like getting your dick enlarged surgically but living in celebacy. With sports cards I can see because the grading companies will check for phony cards, I don't know how rampant fake carded MOTU and GI Joe figs are. That begs the question-- are you looking to sell?

I open stuff, the AFA is essentially a non-entity to me.
In general, "collectible" toys are a terrible investment and, truthfully, the hardest to get stuff these days are produced in much, much larger numbers than even the easiest stuff from years past.
Add to that, there are a great, great many more people sealing them up in cases to preserve them, which only diminishes their rarity. When that can is finally opened, all you have is low prices as everyone gradually reduces their prices just to get the sale.
Micro-examples of this are Pokemon cards and Beanie Babies.
Look at something coming close to 15 years past... Froot Loops Han Solo. $10 on eBay, a mere fraction of what it was pulling in before people wised up and discovered that most of them were still MIB and there were thousands to be bought from investors.
As with anything YMMV. Keep in mind that nostalgic dollar 20-25 years from now doesn't care about ARAH or Star Wars or whatnot... they will care about the toys they had and played with as a kid... and want to find ones that aren't all beat up and decapitated.
Are you collecting Ben 10 and the latest Power Rangers? heh.
