Over the weekend a friend let me borrow the Rhino release of the Sunbow Joe cartoon, season 2 part 1. It started with the mini-series Arise Serpentor, Arise. Then the second disc had some other episodes on it. I think this season originally aired in 1986, but I was disappointed to see that there were several major characters who were not in any of the episodes. They mainly focused on Beachhead, Flint, Cover Girl, Leatherneck, Shipwreck, Duke, Hawk, Mainframe, and Lifeline. Other characters had what I would call cameos... In one episode Rock N Roll and Gung Ho are eating together at "Joe’s Diner" when it is attacked by Dreadnoks, but they don't really have a role in the fight. The original characters are basically just occasionally used as "greenshirts" in big battles. Also noticeably absent-No Snake Eyes at all, not even in the intro. No Storm Shadow, no Spirit, Quick Kick is in the intro, but not in any of the episodes, No Major Blood. Many characters that I remembered as having big roles were not in the show at all. I guess I started avidly watching G.I. Joe around 85 on the USA Cartoon Express everyday, and I remembered that Serpentor Mini-Series, but does anyone know why (other than to advertise new figures to as often as possible) so many early Joes were dropped from the roster? I also was disappointed that there were no public service announcements at the end. I was looking forward to a little "...and knowing is half the battle"! One more question, is this labeled season 2 because the first several G.I. Joe cartoons were part of Mini Series, and not actual regular production seasons?

That's just too funny because I was watching the same episodes yesterday. The PSA's were on Season 1 Part 1 and the GI Joe movie. Rhino really dropped the ball with taking forever to give us Season 2 Part 1 and not delivering Season 2 Part 2. As far as the characters used, well let's face it GI Joe was a 30 minute commerical. Every kid who watched it wanted every character and vehcile they had. So it seems like they would rotate new characters (or products) in for the line.

If you want more of the original characters, you'll have to check out the first 2 mini-series and season 1 (Although season 1 was focusing more on the 85 characters, there's a few from the original 13 that get a good amount of airtime)
This same thing happened to all cartoons back in the day, look at Transformers, Season 3 has almost none of the originals. It's assumed most all of them died. Something you can't do with Joes because they're human so apparently kids will care more (at least that seems to be the thought process back in the day ) |

who you see in any given episode in the cartoon really depends on which episode you watch, which season it was in and what list of characters were given to the writer of that particular episode by the producer or hasbro (i forget who set the list exactly)to chose from to create a story around

The writers were given pages of bios on the characters that Hasbro wanted to feature. The second season was full of the 1986 line of characters because, like others have said, Hasbro wanted to sell their toys.
Flint and Lady J were really the only ones from the 85 roster to get regular airtime in the second season. Shipwreck, Gung-Ho and Roadblock did too. (Roadblock because he got a new figure in 86) Flint and Lady J were virtually ghosts in the Movie, the focus was on the 87 line of characters, but most of the older characters were either seen or heard in the Movie. That was nice. Check out joeguide.com for the best resourse on the Sunbow episodes and how they were broken down into the two seasons and mini-series.

I feel your pain. I enjoyed both seasons, however season 1 was my favorite because they used better Joes imo. Except ASA, I feel those are the best produced 5 shows in it's history.

Not that I have any intention of breaking any copyright laws, you understand. But, merely out of curiosity...if one was inclined to attempt to download some of the old cartoon episodes, where exactly might one look?
I am given to understand that one can obtain the movie via Limewire...not that I've done so, mind you...but what about episodes? Besides the few Hasbro has up on their website.
