I open most of mine to display and customize. I bought doubles of a few to leave MOC. I just did a few that way because 1) it can be expensive and 2) I can display figues better when they're loose. That's just what I do, but what you do has to be up to you.
I get a little bit of a rush opening the figures, but then sometimes it is so hard to tear into that nice, mint-looking card with the cool art on it. Sometimes I cut out the file card, but if for some reason I have multiples, I keep one card uncut. Short Funny Story: I used to collect SW big-time when the POTF came out in 1995 or so. I had quite a few figs, but lost interest and tried to sell some off. They ain't worth a whole lot, apparently, so I kept some MOC in a large tupperware container. So I'm at work last night, and my wife calls and says that I'm gonna be upset. I ask why, and she says that my 4 year-old and 19 month old got into the closet where those figs were and was having a great time opening all of them up! She said that when she caught them, all she said was "Your dad is going to be so angry" and my 4 yo started to cry. I felt bad for him and I couldn't get mad over that. I talked to him on the phone and told him that I wasn't angry, just to ask mommy and daddy next time before he did something like that. But I couldn't help but smile at the fun and innocence of my boys playing with "my toys!"

But I couldn't help but smile at the fun and innocence of my boys playing with "my toys!" I know exactly how you feel about this. Most my "unopened" figures are on display, but I have SEVERAL large totes with various Joe, Star Wars, Marvel and other figures in my basement. My son loves to look at my displayed stuff and every now and then I get that little innocent look of excitement that only a son can give you when he asks if he can play with "my toys". To be honest, I feel a bit weird being a grown man (husband and father) with a massive collection of toys. At the same time I'm just dying to tear into them with my son and have fun. Sounds like I'm getting the advice I was expecting. I think the day will come when I open the rest (maybe not tonight).....I think I'm gonna go get my son and let him open up my convention Piper figure. You have to start somewhere so why not start at the top? |

I found myself in a similar position until I really thought about it. What is it about these that I like? The art? The value? Sure they brought memories back from childhood in a big way. I love the art, but I can find that online. The value? Don't care about that really, I bought them for me. Not to sell now or down the road, I made that mistake once before. I now have my collection opened, I do have a handful on cards but thats 5 out of over 250. I don't regret one bit opening them. They look great on card but they look even better out! my two cents

I have every single figure.... OPENED!! I have no regrets. Life is too short to " Admire" these gems, and the " value " of them will never be as much as the originals. Just look at the Star Wars line (POTF anyone?) Truth be told, even if you like the packaging and want to keep them like that, I would only NOT open the exclusives and variants and open the rest. These figures are just too bad ass not to open. If it's for investment to keep them in a package, you're better off investing in stock. ; )

Whatever feels right for you.
I will never open my singles though, not after opening the DVD packs. Once they were out, I didn't know what to do with them! I played with them as a kid, but now they are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I honestly have no use for them... I asked my friend if I was too old to play with toys. The response was - well, you're not playing with them, you are collecting them, so there is a difference. |

I had the same problem. I really wanted to open all of mine too, and I did. I just regret opening certain figures such as wave 1 flint and Doc(even though I sent away for 3 of them only got 1 from trading). I try to get duplicates on the rare ones and open all the rest. If it's multiples of the same characters, such as snake eyes, just open your favorite one. I try to make customs of figures I didn't find or didn't open(such as Flash). I'm not a hardcore collector, as in I don't have to have every variation in perfect condition all MOC. I couldn't really care less if they're in the package or not as long as I have them. I'd say it's better to have them loose than not at all. It's all up to you anyway. My suggestion if you have the money buy duplicates of the figures you want to open, and keep the rest.

If I want to open up a figure, I just buy a extra one. I would suggest that to you...
