To me blueshirts are the Combat and Combat Service Support of Cobra. The Vipers are the Infantry.

My vision of Cobra has changed over the years. Right now I like the idea of the Blueshirts as basic Cobra bottom of the rung guys with some very basic military training (think medium quality draftee infantry). But Cobra security forces also wear the basic blue uniform (perhaps with a different colored facemask and more modern equipment). They perform everything from garrison duty, guarding and interrogating prisoners, intelligence, "military police" roles, and bodyguard duty/security detail. They're sent in to interact with civilians, they're occupation forces. Think paramilitary police/security forces. Of course they can also serve as basic infantry in direct action missions, but that's ideally wha the Viper Corp is for.
Cobras who want a dedicated combat infantry career, and who are generally tough enough, become Vipers. They're no special Forces or Elite unit, so much as dedicated/highly trained combat infantry. I see the various specialized Vipers to be training/specialist descriptors more than ranks, although you probably wouldn't make it to be an Alley Viper or Snow Serpent without going through basic Viper School and then specialized again, maybe as a Frag, HEAT, or SAW Viper for a while. In my Verse, the basic Viper Squad would be made up by one to four weapons specialist Vipers (depending on the mission) and the rest Basic Vipers. But elite "Environmental Specialist" units like the AVs, Snow Serpents, range Vipers, Night Vipers, generally prefer to work on their own - so they all need to include troopers who are qualified in the respective weapons specialties. Of course these Environmental Specialists also function as instructors to bring the rest of the Viper Corps and perhaps the Blueshirts up to scratch on the basics of whatever environment they're fighting in. I see the Viper system as a highly flexible, modular system. If you're a basic Viper, you could be sent on an anti-armor patrol walking point for a couple of HEAT Vipers and a Laser Viper. Next week you might be the assistant gunner for a SAW Viper. The problem of course is that there are no designated firm squads or platoons, so while individual troopers might feel a string allegiance to fellow Vipers of their specialization, they don't always feel as bound to the guy they're sharing a foxhole with at any given time. |
