In the Ultimate GIJoe Guide 82-94, it says a lot of characters from 84 to 88, most of 86 in fact, are replacements, or as Larry Hama put it in the exert refering to Grunt, 'Do-Overs'. Characters with the exact same specialty that could just be re-costumed or retrained older characters, like Snake Eyes got.
Here is a list I compiled of the Replacements and some that may be due to similarity in areas of the character. Sgt Flash > Sci Fi Sgt Stalker > Beachhead Rocknroll > Roadblock > Heavy Duty Torpedo > Wet Suit Hawk > Duke Cobra Commander > Serpentor > Overlord Tomax & Xamot / Storm Shadow > Slice & Dice* Zap > Bazooka Barbeque > Ice Cream Soldier Grunt > Footloose Gung Ho > Leatherneck Doc > Life Line Mutt & Junkyard > Law & Order** Scarlett > Lady Jaye > Jinx > Scarlett*** Breaker > Dialtone Snow Job > Iceberg Troopers > Vipers Recondo > Outback **** Blowtorch > Charboil * Related names, only mentioned together, have red themed mooks and are Arashikage Ninja. Tomax & Xamot were retired and Storm Shadow was now a Joe. If they aren't, it's an amazing coincidence. ** Two dog trainer, police type characters? Suss. *** Scarlett, Lady Jaye and Jinx are all Intelligence, except Jinx is a Ninja. When Scarlett came back, she fully eclipsed Jinx by being a Ninja too. Both Scarlett and Jinx have a connection to Snake Eyes. **** While not stated by anyone, both are Jungle Warefare and have a distinctly Australian vibe to them, specifically with Outback's name and Recondo's look, which Action Force picked up on. In your personal canon, if you don't split your teams up like the cartoon or you have each team with a distinct specialty, how do you deal with the do-overs? Do you have preferences between the same types of characters? |

It sometimes bothers me too, GI Joe is supposed to be a small special missions force.
They really wouldn't need Wild Bill, they should all be trained pilots. They should all be specialists in every environment, from desert to Arctic. Really, SnowJob & Outback should be the same dude. |

New characters were only introduced to sell more figures. There is no other explanation. The comics and cartoons were advertisements for the toys only. It would have been boring if the same characters and vehicles came out every year in a different outfit or different design. Gi Joe as a toy line wouldnt have lasted as long as it did, if they didnt introduce new characters on the Joe and Cobra side the line wouldnt have made any money.
What you say about the Joes being replaced by newer Joes with the same speciality is the mostly the same as the vehicles. Vamp > Awe Striker > Desert Fox Ram > Silver Mirage > Recon Sled Wolverine > Armadillo > Triple T Mobat > Mbt Mauler > Havoc > Persauder APC > Warthog

Mutt was supposed to be a Cobra dog handler at first and
Law and Order might have actually been originally conceived as something a bit different (you'll have to wait for the Declassified podcast for that bit of info, however). So consider that sometimes it isn't simply to sell more characters, although that's obviously a big part of it. Sometimes things got put together and it was too late to change etc or something was decided against later in the game etc. But think of how many MORE versions of Hawk we'd have if they didn't move on to 1,000 Dukes. Recondo is a Jungle TROOPER where Outback is a "survivalist." Thin line? Maybe. But there is a difference.

The sad, hard fact ofmilitary life (as "Operation Red Retrieval" succinctly put it, is that there is a price to be paid for serving your country. Redundancy in skills is a necessity, especially if you are needed on multiple front lines. Recondo and Outback may be needed in two different countries at the same time.
Additionally, soldiers are generally NOT expected to be in for life. It's considered a young person's game, and new meat needs to come in to keep the troops fresh and vital. Yes, the characters WERE created to sell more toys. And we here love us our Joes, so what's the gripe? More characters equals more opportunities for inter-personal conflict. As far as the ladies all being Intelligence, I suspect this was a vaguely sexist way of explaining having a hot chick in the thick of battle. Most of you are younger and didn't grow up in a time when women were not allowed to serve on the front lines. But back in the 80s a Lady Jaye would have to be some sort of specialist to get near the action... or a nurse. Not all women are nurses. |

There are 1000's if people in the military with the same speciality. That's what makes it an army.
It's true about how lame it would've been if the same characters were released over and over. I didn't like dozens if variants as a kid and most people don't like them now.

I never really thought about it like the way the Op put it. But I know in the comics they put most of the O13 behind a desk when new guys came in. When I was growing up and played with Joes, though, I just put guys with the same specialty in teams. I remeber really digging RnR and Roadblock and putting them together at the front of the line with their big machine guns.

To play devil's advocate, though, GI Joe isn't an army, they are a special forces team, so they would be relatively small in number. But still, on a team, you have to have back-up and second-stringers. So like I said, it never bothered me.
