imagine if when you were a kid, in 1983, and you really wanted these brand new awesome G.I. Joe's, and instead your dad gave you some lame old figures from the 60's that he liked.
I can't imagine buying toys and saving them for my child because I liked them rather than letting him develop his own interests and buying him the toys that are new for him. |

We've been playing the "what the kids at school have now" game. They really are bouncing between toys right now, tech deck (gotta have it, never played with it), Bakugan (wtf?) and a bunch of other crap that seems to fill a niche then off to the next thing. Of course they are wanting their own xbox, phone, computer and everything I think they are still to young for and to be honest... they can wait a few years (8 & 10). The boys joes have become display figures much like mine... though I'd still like him to play with them (does a bit) but he says he wants to set them up like I do. All in all... they are growing up too fast and its getting harder and harder to try to get them to enjoy being kids at all.

I gave my oldest son a few of my old ARAH pieces. Then I found them with broken or missing pieces. I don't give them any of that anymore. They seem to be more into Lego Ninjago and video games. So that's cool. I just let the
them Like what they like.

I was visiting mom and dad's house for the holidays, so lots of my old collection is there. Beast Wars, carded '95 POTF2, McFarlane toys. I have no sons, so it'll be eBay fodder one day.
The only thing in my old room my 4 yr old daughter wanted to play with were the 90s POTF2 12" Star Wars dolls. She has no real interest in the Joes, but she has a small collection of Marvel Universe figures she plays with a LOT. I think she likes the colors. She certainly massacred all the old 80s He-Man toys I gave her with some rough play. I passed on 5 action figures to my 13 yr. old daughter. Despite army life, we would actually play a few years ago whenever I could be home - so these pieces are ones that she'll keep forever: 1. 2002 Masters of the Universe Mer Man figure 2. A zip line Batman figure from a 6" line some years back 3. Shrek action figure with belching action 4. A little mermaid/Ariel action figure 6" Kingdom Hearts series 5. McFarlane toys Anime line: Tenchi Muyo "Ryoko" figure Hand picked by her, but at the moment they're in a shoebox. It doesn't go with her "brooding teen" room decor where she goes to sulk and tune out the world with her iPod, text-friendly phone and facebook. I collect for me, with the thought that my son can have them if he wants when he gets older. Sure, he likes GI Joes. He's also 3 like your son. Their tastes are going to change, especially when they get to school and see what everyone else is into. At least the foundation is set with the things we like to share with them.
He loves the outdoors and being active more than anything. For that I am glad.

I get me one and keep one on card for my son who will be born in February. If he don't like them, great. It will still be two for me and extras to customize. I sure don't do it to make money later. My 3yr old daughter loves G.I.Joe and so I've gotten her most of the renegades because she watches the cartoon with me, then I also got her a Baroness and a Lady Jaye. I do take off all the weapons and extras if they come off. She will just lose them and I can use them for something else.

I did this for my daughters when they were younger but they eventually got out of it. However I was only conserned about what they wanted, and they useually were pretty vocal. Although my oldest had a son (3 years at the moment) and he found her Baroness poster she had forgotten and shouted "Mommy, mommy, this on my wall!" which is where it is now.
Of course I had to tell my daughter "You realize he is going to develop a fetish for librarians in leather cause you did that, right" LOL. |

I first started collecting last year around October, the reason? Well I decided I wanted a part time job for extra cash to help pay some bills and me and my wife were expecting our first child in May! Well it turns out of the 5 or so places I applied for, Toys R Us was the first to pick me up, they had just started hiring for seasonal employees! So as you can imagine being surrounded by awesome toys a couple days out of the week, the nostalgia factor starts up... So I started picking up a couple Lego sets once in a while, and of course my wife was wondering why in the world was I buying toys and at the time I was just like, just wait our child will thank us one day! Then I saw the PoC Commando Snake Eyes, and that is when my Joe nostalgia kicked in... Part of me hopes when he gets older he will like the Joes but then I also realize this isn't the 80's anymore and we don't have isle upon isle of action figures anymore!!! But either way, if he does like them, he has a very nice collection of Ninja Turtles, Legos, and GI Joe when he gets old enough!!!
I am honestly awaiting the glorious return of the action figure, I am sick of seeing all the crap bakugan and beyblades junk taking up so much room at the TRU I work at, yes they kept me on after Christmas last year, and decided I should stay to help fund my newfound hobby Last edited by Veedubguy83; 12-30-2011 at 02:40 PM.. |
