Is you mad? Cobra figures have some of the best Joe figures no question. When Cobra stepped into the scene was when everything went wild. Come on! |

A scenario that involves rock 'ard good guys slugging it out against rock 'ard bad guys in super cool vehicles that's ever so slightly detached from reality.

What makes GI JOE, to me, really has nothing to do with films that may or may not be close to what GI JOE should or shouldn't be.
To me...what makes GI JOE...is memories of a time in my life where that special mission force really propelled my imagination, and gave me enjoyment as a child..(and still does today)..it's ESCAPISM. ESCAPISM and the ability to relate to the line, is what defines it for me...getting lost in all the characters, and the stories, using my imagination and investing in the mythology is EXACTLY what GI JOE is to me. That rich mythology, past and present, in all the different forms of GI JOE, from comics to graphic novels, and even to the movies, makes GI JOE what it is bc for me it's attractive to me to relate to their world because it lends me the ability to essentially "be a kid" in the small facet of my life that GI JOE occupies... ...as the rest of me has grown and taken on responsibility and my life has evolved into being filled with adult things...GI JOE remains the constant connection to the part of me that will forever remain a child. ...bc it's a a really colorful, well thought out set of ideas, that suck you in, at least they do for me...and they keep my inner child alive...and Larry Hama can really be credited with that almost by himself...until recently at least, when other writers, especially in the comics, started to add some really cool stuff into the fabric of the GI JOE-VERSE...and a lot of those guys adding to the mythology do a nice job of sucking you in to that ESCAPISM as well...HASBRO can be credited too, for keeping the mythology intact all these years (even if it might get shoddy at times) bc they furnish me the tools i need to stay in touch with that part of me that still is a kid. To me it's not really about comparing GI JOE to anything else that makes it what it is...it's my own personal attachment to the line that defines it...from, like i said, when i was a kid playing with the toys, back in the day...or when my parents used to surprise me with something new for christmas or a birthday, or if i did something good, yah know? those are just good times, good memories, good feelings...and GI JOE represents that for me. And those memories and feelings, for me (and a lot of us) are good memories from a simpler time in my/our life/lives...i think that's what defines GI JOE for more than a few members on here...that nostalgia is has we all relate to. ...the relationship i have with GI JOE...it's almost therapeutic...GI JOE is something for me that i have always been able to use my imagination and get lost in the JOE universe for hours...it's always been a spark for me like that (and for all of us or we wouldn't be here)... the JOE VERSE has always been like a safer better place, where i could just explore, play, and disconnect from something that maybe was making me feel sad or shitty as a child, to even now as an adult where responsibility and just plain old being an adult can be overwhelming...GI JOE is there to buffer that, at least for me. I often find myself not opening a figure, until i start to feel depressed or stressed out...it's like comfort food...i'll save a few figures for when i need a pick me up- then i will open them- because it feels good and makes me happy. ...or i'll save some figures to open as reminder in my life when things get hard or tough, that the fun, and imagination of the GI JOE universe is always there to kick back and delve into...like i said before ESCAPISM. I'm not saying i'm some depressed guy all the time...but GI JOE does make me feel good when, i'm feeling, for lack of a better word, "blue"...GI JOE is like a crutch, when i'm feeling that way...because it's fun, reminds me of a time in my life where initially GI JOE was something that i always looked forward to, and i still look forward to what going on within the JOE VERSE now...which is obvious bc i am part of a site like this. GI JOE to me...what makes it...is the sense of wonder and excitement it still gives me, in any of it's incarnations, even as an adult...defined by the comfort of the escapism the memories bring me, and also by the things i look forward to as GI JOE evolves to bring me new memories and excitement as the mythology grows. It's important to keep in touch with your inner child...it's important for everyone...some people forget that, and they become callous, and jaded, then become miserable... GI JOE helps me to NOT FORGET my inner child...and not to become callous or jaded...because the world is unforgiving and it's easy to lose your inner child...with GI JOE, in my life, it's always easy to find my inner child and that's something i don't ever want to lose. 1. Cobra, they are vital for the "Good vs. Evil aspects.
2. Characters, Again this made GI Joe ARAH stick out, both sides had unquie, interesting, and fun characters. One of my gripes of ROC is the characters seemed rather bland IMO. 3. High tech, off the wall weapons, this is especially true for cobra, while joe could get away with a thing or two here and there, Cobra had to have some of the most off the wall stuff (HISS tanks, Weather Dominator, Emporer cloned from great leaders of history, ect). Nanomites SHOULD have fit this catagory, but somehow fell very short. |
