As a kid in the 1980s, I was pretty lucky to have most of the Joe vehicles and sets, including the USS Flagg.
My worst day as a Joe collector must've been when the decision was made in '90 or '91 to clear out my toys to make room for a more "grown up" setup, i.e. desks for my brother and myself, couch, etc. We lived in an apartment, so there wasn't a garage, attic or basement to store stuff in. That meant one thing -- the incinerator chute. Piece by piece I tossed all my vehicles -- Flagg, Command Center, Defiant, Thunderclap, Dragonfly, and even my favorite -- Night Raven. All the while, I kept telling myself, "Man, I'll regret this one day." In anticipation of that, I kept all my figures and their weapons. But the sting never goes away. Any of you guys have a similar memory? My apologies if this has already been brought up. |

Why would you do that? You could've given those to charity, the goodwill, to a younger family member, or just gave them to neighborhood kids. What a waste.

My story is one not of my own choosing, and instead of very bad timing. We had just moved to a new house (rental) and lots of our stuff was still boxed up. The place was small so we didn't have room to be tripping over the boxes everyday so they ended up in the basement. So in less than a week after moving in, it rained big time, I mean like Noah gets worried kinda rain, and the sewers backed up. There was 4 feet of black water in the basement. We lost tons of stuff, more than just toys, but as a kid I remember Mom trying really hard to clean up my Terrordrome, and just couldn't do it. That black water must have bonded chemically. I lost my TD, and lots of other toys including some Transformers and who knows what else. Another few days and it would have all come upstairs. That's the real annoying thing. To wrap up, that house sucked, and the basement flooded about every three months - we never had anything down there after the first time though.

When I was in high school and getting ready for college, money was tight. I advertised my Joe collection in one of the free "penny saver' type papers and ended up selling just about all of it to a mom of an asthmatic son for about $100. Included in that collection were the Whale, Moray, Tomahawk, Mamba, Conquest, Phantom, Night Raven, Warthog, Havoc, Snow Cat, Wolf, Stun, and a bunch of other vehicles and over 100 figures.
I held on to about a dozen of my favorite figures plus the Skystriker, Rattler, Demon, Mauler and Mobat. Unfortunately the Skystriker, Rattler and Demon have since been destroyed. That was a huge regret for me. Often I wish I had just packed them away instead of picking just a few to hold on to. Once, when we were visiting my parents, my son found what remains of the Rattler and was playing with it. I could only imagine what fun we would have had someday if I had been able to keep the whole set in decent shape. We could have spent hours fixing them back up (new rubber bands + paint) so he could have them. I guess that is part of why I collect the 25th now, hoping to at least pass that much on to him when he gets a little older. |

I was out in the yard playing Joes vs Star Wars, as always. Had a nice set up. Of course by 85, it was mostly Joes at this point.
However, I was playing and having fun when my step dad, who was a major asshole, came home and drove the car through the yard, running over everything. The one thing that was messed up the worse was my Eels and Imperial Attack base. But I did get the Flagg the following year from my mom. |
