Once I decided to take my original Clutch, and affix him to a kite so that he could do some hang-gliding. This was obviously before the Foam Gliders came out. I used black electrical tape and thought nothing of it.
Sent the kite up about 50-70 feet and watched it soar. Brought it back down and Clutch was no more. I was out in a huge grassy field by my house. It was not until years later that I finally found clutch. He was broken and now a light gray color... PF |

I regret this to this day, and I am a huge one on proper gun safety... you'll see why.
As a kid we really did have a lot. Mostly hand me downs, food stamps, well you get the idea. I only had a handful of joes I could afford to buy, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow being among my favorite possessions. I never had a Flagg, or Sky Striker or anything like that but I did get in exchange for chores a used hydrofoil and Tomahawk from a neighbor. We lived in a mountainous wooded area with a small pond where I would spend hours playing. Well, these were my pride and joy for a couple years until I got the 'ol "when are you going to grow up?" speech from my new step dad. Well it wasn‘t long before, “Dad”, decided that there was to be no more toys. Ever. Time to grow up... so he got me a .22 rifle. (can you see where this is going?) He suggested it was time to clean house, or the toy box as it were. In short, he claimed the Tomahawk and it became… a clay pigeon. He had me throw it from a cliff so he could see if he could hit it… with a shotgun. Well he did, and there wasn’t much left. (Safety first right?) Well, then it was my turn. Down to the pond we went, armed with my new .22. (I’ve shot before on the farm but there I was taught firearm safety and respect and that they weren’t toys, well this didn’t apply to “Dad”.) The Hydrofoil was loaded up with a few of the Joes I had left, most notably my favorites. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. Well the “Hydro” was sent afloat on its final voyage. The jerk had me pick off the Joes first before he had me shoot the hell out of the boat. All hands were lost and the Hydrofoil never saw daylight again. I’m glad to say that that “man” is no longer a part of my family’s life. I enjoy guns but only in a respectable manner. Well, “Dad” I’m buying Joes again and I’m still not ready to grow up… fully. Actually, you were quite grown up if you could hit a tomahawk falling off a cliff with a .22 rifle. Heck, you were Wild Bill Hickok. As for your 'Dad', anyone could hit something falling with a scattergun. Sheesh. Sounds like a real fine man. Sorry you had to endure that pal. Revenge is sweet, no? I can't read anymore of these stories. Sends a spike straight through my heart! The things we do in youth! Sab |

Fortunately I have no traumatizing Joe memories haunting me from childhood idiocy, but I wasn’t really as into them then as I am now. I can only remember maybe having a Spirit, a quick-kick, and a raptor that I got in a bag at a garage sale when they were a few years off store shelves. I think I still might have ‘em someplace, but those particular ones kept getting misplaced…think I broke the Raptor anyway when I pulled on his o-ring too taut to see how far it’d go.

A few quickies...
During a trip to South Carolina my Steel Brigade figure fell into "quicksand" on Myrtle Beach...I must have torn up 6 feet of sand near where I was sitting but never saw him again. I guess he went with the tide, and I couldn't help but think he might have come back to me had he been Undertow or Wetsuit instead of my beloved Steel Brigade. My first custom was of course my favorite figure, Mercer from the Slaughter's Marauder's pack. I used silver Testors paint. The kind that never dries on plastic. I didn't realize you could unscrew joes and swap parts yet, otherwise I would have been able to save the top 50% of him. Bumping into a group of popular girls from school at the mall while I was holding a fresh new Storm Shadow V2. I tried to claim it was for my little cousin...But they told the whole school and everyone was laughing at me all week. I couldn't have been older than 11 at the time, so I dunno why they made such a big deal about the fact that I bought a toy. Needless to say, when one of those girls suddenly became romantically interested in me some seven years later, I had my revenge by not calling her the day after. >: ) My second custom was turning my beloved H.I.S.S. II into the Thundertank from Thundercats. After three hours of work with those black plastic Nintendo Cartride covers, scissors, a hacksaw, a wood burning pen, and some paints and glue, my custom was complete! A complete peice of junk. Needless to say, what was left of the H.I.S.S. II went into the garbage with a small peice of my soul that evening. Of course the worst and most traumatizing moment was like many of your own...When I reluctantly agreed that I'd grown up at 13 and let my mother throw all of my toys away. She still feels bad to this day, as I didn't seem to recover until Ebay came into existence. Remember how it wasn't a huge deal if a crotch broke, but when a thumb went on a favorite figure it effectively became garbage? Ahhh the memories. And now, in contrast, some good memories... FINALLY finding Storm Shadow V1 after months of salivating at the card art. The only other time I've been that happy was the first time I felt a girl up and maybe not even then. My mother buying me the Cobra Night Raven because we found it on clearance at Sears. Owning the Cobra Night Raven at that age was equivalent to owning a Lamborghini now. I must have played with that thing for hours. Finally owning a Duke due to the power of Tiger Force! And finally: Realizing that I could unscrew Joes and swap parts! Immediately I gave Snake Eyes V3 an unmasked look (I used the Countdown head as it looked the most like me), and while on a hot desert mission he removed his shirt as well. I used Road Pig's torso and arms, which had a kind of Groundskeeper Willie effect on Snake Eyes V3 if you know what I mean, but I was little and it made sense at the time. |

I threw it out the window and said I wished it was a GI JOE over that shit. Their faces were priceless. |

In my Joe world, the Joes with broken thumbs and crotches became patients/residents at the VA hospital (a couple of cardboard boxes with door and windows). Cobra eventually blew up the hospital and all the disabled vets died.

My worst childhood memory is when my mother sold my vintage joes at a garage sale. It was an accident and they got mixed up in a box of garage sale stuff. Needless to say, they all sold...
