Wondering what the Joe guys think on this matter. What do you guys consider a variant when you are collecting? Like, when you see the difference, you go "I need to get that one too now, sonofa!"
These are some things as a general toy collector I consider variants...
Card / Packaging changes
Weapon / Part remolds
Weapon / Part recolors
I think I am most interested in whether or not you Joe guys consider weapon changes as real varaints. Do you look in the package and see if the weapon is color A or color B, and only buy it if it is one or the other. Or do you look in the package and try to see if the weapon is a re-molded version or not, and then only grab it because it has/doesn't have that new molded weapon.
Do you need to have them all to be a "completionist", or is 1 carded version of Figure X good enough.
And, I only consider these things "variants" when they are done "mid run", without Hasbro (or other companies) saying they are being done. AKA they release the regular version, and the second version shows up on the shelves later on with no notice, mid-wave, etc, then it is a variant.
If they do these things, and release it as "upgraded version figure" in a later wave, then it isn't a variant, but rather, a new release.
In recent years, stickers that are applied to packages, or store based "bonus packs" which have bonus smaller items taped onto a bigger package, are not variants. Since they vary store to store, and are not done at Hasbro. However, if Hasbro does up a special bonus pack packaging change to get the bonus items in there, then it would be a variant or new release.
But, I'd like to hear what you guys think overall, even if there is something I didn't mention or cover.

To me, a true variant is one recognized by the manufacturer. That said, many seem to consider production errors and/or paint application errors as variants. Although true to the word, they aren't "real" variants IMO.

I don't necessarily collect them if I get them, that's cool but I deem it as any change in production of a character, accessories and packaging.
An "error" is not a variation. Change in color sceme, sculpt, placement in package would be a variation.

I would go with the mfg. actually putting it out as a variant. Breaker w/beard would be a variant to Breaker w/out beard. Running changes in production (minor color/weapons) wouldn't be a big enough diff. for me to consider looking for it.

variants are stuff like black destro, where they released a certain amount on purpose of a difference in toy.
I also agree with the idea that a variant is also something that can be unintentional, I.E. a company releases a toy and on the first couple of runs they package it with the wrong accessories...then it is corrected.
but the random error...thats just an error, kinda neat to have, but not a recognized variant.

variants are not packaging errors or paint errors. ERRORS ARE NOT VARIANTS, the are errors. (hence the name -errors) also I agree with everything said above me.

Seems reasonable enough. The moral of the story is that you shouldn't go chasing after every little flaw that slips past QC before they hit the boat.

Package Variant: Any change that is clearly made in production and not at the store level. This IMO includes Some sticker's that are attached to the package.
Figure: Any change that is make to the paint, mold and weapons including color.

Ok here is the problem that I've seen on these threads since I've joined.
What we collectors consider a real "variant" should really be called a "chase" figure. I hate that the term "variant" is even used to explain what a "chase" figure or a rare short packed figure is.
To tell you the truth any variation whether it is planned by the toy company or it's production error can be considered a "variant". Now I know we don't call such things as paint errors and missing parts "variants" around here like they do all over ebay, but they are variations of the original intended product.
Why don't we just stop using the term "variant" around here and start calling figures such as Snake-Eyes with black Timber, Shipwreck with Shark tattoo, and black headed comic pack Destro, "chase" figures as they really are. The exclusives gold PDD and the blue suited SDCC Cobra Commander can count as well. The upcomming clear blue Wraith figure will also be a "chase" figure.
As you all know a "chase" figure is a different version of a figure that the toy company releases. this figure is released at the same time as the original "common" version. A good example of this are the characters from the Marvel legends line who sometimes are released with 2 different customes. Another example is the new Batman Dark Knight Movie Masters which actually have a picture of the "chase" figure on the back of the card. It actually tells you that it is indeed a "chase' figure.
For this new G.I. joe line that we have grown to love I can only recall real "chase" figures, or what you guys would call real "variants". As I listed before they are Snake-Eyes with black Timber, Shipwreck with Shark tattoo, and black headed comic pack Destro. Only these 3 count becuase they were all released with another more common version at exactly the same time in the same case. The exclusives gold PDD and the blue suited SDCC Cobra Commander can count as well because they were both released with a less common version at the same time. The upcomming clear blue Wraith figure will also be a "chase" figure because they are releasing the regular version at the same time.
For those who are wondering I do not consider the ugly banana yellow Stalker a "chase" figure. He was a production change because the green version was not released at the same time. Hasbro did us a favor and released a different version soon after because we complained that the other one didn't resemble his original ARAH counterpart.
If anyone has anything to add to this please let me know. Also if I'm missing any "chase" figures from this line please let me know as well, but make sure it was a figure that was released at the same time as another less common version was.
