I'm basically with ya on that.
To me, chase figures are something done intentionally by the company to increase demand or create real or artificial scarcity - shark tat Shippy, black Timber, black head Destro, gold PDD, blue SDCC CC, and the upcoming clear Wraith are examples. Variants are the changes in hip articulation, small paint changes, small mistakes that need correction, etc. Even better are error variants, such as yellow Stalker - major changes made by the company mid-production, very few of which get out. What I don't consider variants are the ones we see all over ebay - missing gear, wrong stand, upside-down something or other.

So what is the purpose of the variant or chase figure?

Chase is a better term, yea…I’ll have to get that to stick with me after so many years of considering differences between certain figs and accessories ‘variants’
I guess what I’d consider a ‘Chase’ figure would just be something different with features of as figure, and accessories. None of this ‘misssing parts’ or ‘upside down’ card garbage people try and scam folks into believing is collectible. Stuff like that makes figures undesirable for the most part, not collectible, wish people on eBay would get with that concept, it’s not so complex. I like big differences though, For instance…oh, say a figures shirt cuffs vary from one to the other, *yawn*. But if there’s a different accessory, or an entirely different paint job, or even a freakin’ entirely different head sculpt…that’d be sweet. The only thing that annoys me is even with all the sites archiving and detailing on these ‘chase’ figs, it’s hard to keep up with them. Unless you frequent places such as these and someones shouting about finding a chase, or announcing it…but if you miss it, and find out about it later, it freakin’ stings! |

Ok here is the problem that I've seen on these threads since I've joined.
To tell you the truth any variation whether it is planned by the toy company or it's production error can be considered a "variant". Now I know we don't call such things as paint errors and missing parts "variants" around here like they do all over ebay, but they are variations of the original intended product. |

Depends. Chase figures are designed to bring excitement and demand to the line via real or artificial scarcity.
Variants can be a number of things - in the case of yellow Stalker it was to fix the FUBAR'd original. In other cases it's just to change little things, cut costs, or fix small mistakes fans beg for. Sometimes its to undermine the entire western way of life, as in the upside-down-flag Duke variant.

IMHO, a variant is anything that the manufacturer intentionally changes. So regardless of the reason (factory error, etc) the manufacturer has recognized the error and made a change to the way the figure/package is produced. This in addition to running changes (removing the 25th anniversary logo for example) and intended variants (Black head Destro) are the variants that I will actually make an effort to collect.
One off, sloppy paint applications, missing pieces, etc are neat in their own respect I suppose but I will not seek them out.
