Appreciate all the knowledge on the Defiant. I'll actually be up where I'm storing it this weekend so I might try to crank it up with the shuttle off it...at least I know I'm not the only one who couldn't crank it up all the way. I remember it totally bummed me out, what, 20 years ago, when it wouldn't work. I'll be on the lookout for that fin as well.

The defiant is not poorly designed. I've emailed back and forth with one of the designers and he says HASBRO made some cost cutting decisions that really negated the design work as it pertained to the crawler. Mainly the crank mechanism. He wanted to go with metal, Hasbro said no. To say the whole thing is poorly designed is not correct. The Defiant itself and the Booster are very well designed and sturdy toys packed with playability and features, its the crawler that runs into some trouble, again the crank being a big part of it as well as the wheels not being sturdy enough to support the playset. I must say that when I had it brand new, it functioned wonderfully and I was able to roll it around the room and use the crank without hassle. Time is not very good to the crawler. As for being lame, I don't think so. This was one of my very favorite toys as a kid, I had more space adventures than I can count. One of my favorite play scenarios was to put the entire complex on the FLAGG's deck and do "sea launches." Last edited by jaimanstone; 08-20-2008 at 03:49 PM.. |

I am wondering if it were ever supposed to be able to go all the way vertical. If you look at the catalog you will see the Defiant pictured vertically, but you will also notice there is no crank on the prototype.
In the commercial for the Defiant, it does have a crank and it is pictured as leaning back for launch: Thoughts? |

I would help confirm, but seeing as I have everything but the crawler.. mine can take off vertical if I want. LOL Right now it's sitting nicely on the deck of one of my Flaggs till I can find the stupid thing.
But I am glad this question was asked so I wouldn't feel like an idiot trying to get the thing to go straight up.

This is one of the pieces that has eluded me for years.. I picked up the shuttle and piggyback shuttle at Joe Con pretty cheap.. um. free. But those are the easy parts to find of this thing.. the crawler is a whole other story. I have an original MCC and one of the rereleases they had at TRU. Then picked up my second incomplete Flagg at Joe Con for basically free as well. I have one that is complete. Took forever to find every little stinking piece!
