Okay, I've read through some posts about kids destroying collections and wanted to start a different twist on that thread. I'm encountering a different problem and wanted to know who else is dealing with this......
My son who is 4, loves action figures (It doesn't help having a father who is an action figure junkie either) His big thing at the moment is super heroes (Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, Ben 10...etc, etc)....while on the search for my Joes I'll usually pick him up something and over time he's aquired quite a large collection of figures. Recently he's started to take an interest in Daddy's G.I. Joe collection (or as he calls them...E-Jie Joes) and wants to play with the stuff I have displayed. Every now and then I'll pull down the Dragonfly, MOBAT or Vamp and let him put his figures in them and have a ball. This is all supervised by me of course, but I still cringe when the play gets a little rough and I feel like a bad guy when I put the stuff back on the shelf.....after all, they are just toys (expensive toys, but still....) I love the fact that my son is interested in the Joes, but at the same time it concers me. I'd love more then anything to buy two of each figure (one for me, one for him) but I can't afford that, so that puts that to rest. The concern also lies in just what am I teaching him? Am I teaching him the "toys" need to be displayed and put on a shelf and be "off limits" and not played with? I want him to enjoy his toys and not grow up thinking they might be valuable one day so he better not bend their legs or play with them. We also have a 1 year old and the sharing thing is an issue now......I'm just waiting for him to throw it in my face that I don't share my toys so why should he? That brings up another issue.....dad with toys. I'll be honest, when I was young and if my dad had a toy collection I probably would have thought he was a little weird. I'm sure I would have loved it when I was young (like my son does now) but as I got older I might have been embarrassed by it. Anybody else have anything to contribute or add? I'm not alone dealing with this am I? Last edited by 82joe; 08-06-2008 at 10:49 AM.. |

If you cant afford to get him one of each, which he really doesnt need anyway, just get him some of the 5 packs. The DVD packs are great and the original joe and cobra 5 packs. You can go to Ross Dress store and get the joe and legions pack for $12 each.
The upcoming Toys R us greenshirt pack would be great as well. I mention these because they are cheaper per figure than the rest. You could also go on ebay and get a big lot of incomplete vehicles for pretty cheap that he could play with.

Well, Im not a dad, but I have 3 little nephews who love my toy collection. I have stuff I don't mind them playing with, and stuff that stays on the shelves. They always ask why they can't play with the stuff on the shelves, and I tell them "They mean a lot to me, and you know how it's real easy to lose pieces to the toys, or break the toys, this way your Uncle can keep them nice looking for a long time and when you get older, Ill let them take them off the shelves and look at them."
They really started getting into GI Joe stuff because of my collection, so what I did was buy a ton of the Spy Troops and VvV loose figures (Thanks Viper48!) for them to play with. Its not the exact same figures, but it is GI Joe, so they still love playing with them. Ill let them play with certain vehicles (ones I have 2 of or something that I dont mind if it gets dinged up), and that works perfect with the ST and VvV figures, so we are all happy!

yeah like hectorxd said just get him some figures. get him a joe instead of some superhero figure. as for sharing, my uncle has collected toys all his life and when he had kids he just packed them up during their early years then busted them out later. not saying its what I'd do but its an option.

I have been letting my nephews play with some of my extras as well. For vehicles I have several of the power team elite stuff like helicopters, watch tower, landing rafts, and jeeps. They love playing with joe now.

I have gone the Power Team Elite route....he has a few, but he knows the difference (smart kid)
I have tried to stear him into getting a Joe instead of another Batman....but no dice. He wants Batman and then comes home and wants to put Batman in my HISS tank. I guess I could break down and give him all the VVV and JVC stuff I can live without........my wifes solution: just get rid of the stuff and you won't have to worry about it....he has enough toys as it is, he doesn't need anymore.....you don't want to spoil him. what to do, what to do............. |

Buy him all the peg warmers. They will be more valuable to him than they are sitting all sad on the peg getting annoyed looks for weeks.
Put the peg warmers to good use. Also can buy him 1.97, 3.97 "Corps" figs and keep the cool weapons for yourself. |

Well the PTE figures suck all sorts of ways but the vehicles and accessories are good stuff. Who doesnt want to play with the watch tower? Or the jeeps. My nephews love attaching one of the landing craft boats to the back of the jeep and haul all the guys around on the carpet. They loved the bats when i let them play with them. They both want bats for christmas and one of them wanted a snow serpent as well. I said "maybe if I could find them" and than I told them a tale of the mean ole wicked scalper who looks like a troll and lives in a basement and comes out to feast on collectors and kids alike. haha

this is my worst fear. though i dont have kids now i will eventually. Im either going to have to get a hefty door lock (though when i was little a lock never stoped me) or just bight the bullet and keep my stuff packed up till they are 10 or so. But like all hobbies, theres always sacrifice.
I was all about playing with stuff when i was younger. smashing, burning, huge wars, dirt, mud, and so on. But i get as much enjoyment displaying my toys now as i did playing with them when i was young. (though i still have a battle or 2 every now and then haha) anyways, i hope my kids will get the same enjoyment out of toys i did, and do now. |
