BEST THREAD EVER!!!
Steel you are a wise man and speak the truth. I've been saying the same for years when it comes to my collection as well. It's hard having to stick up for yourself against all of the smokers, alcoholics, and drug users. I also agree with what you said about the strip joints, but at least that can be looked at as if you are going out to see a show. Have you seen the price of those Broadway shows lately? I think the strip joint is a deal compared to them, but I still wouldn't waste my money there. I go through this same argument everyday with my dad. He is a heavy gambler, but he doesn't see his problem. I try to tell him that at least I can sell everything I have if I ever needed the money, and possibly make a profit in the process. Then I ask him where are his losings? He's left with nothing to show for it. Can he ever get them back? Not really unless he wins about a million dollars in one shot, but he will go poor before that trying to win. I even show him how these toys are selling on ebay, but he thinks it's all fake. The major problem with him is not so much about the money he loses, it's more of a problem with how it effects his family. He used to take me and my brother to the bank when we were kids and make us sign our savings bonds away to him so he could go and gamble. Then he would give us like $5 bucks each to keep us quiet so we wouldn't tell mom. I'm still paying back college loans which might have been lower if I had that money today. The worst part about all this is the yelling and the screaming everytime he loses. I grew up poor because of his problem, but I probably wouldn't have cared so much if I didn't have to hear his abusive mouth. I guess seeing my dad that way made me the person I am, especially when it comes to the way I treat other people because I never want to be like him. As far as my collection goes, I guess I making up for my lost childhood. Do we collectors have a problem? Sure we do, but if it doesn't affect our family and the people around us in a negative way like those other vices of life that we've mentioned then I don't see what the big problem is. If you can pay your bills, take care of your responsibilities, and be kind to your fellow human beings then you are doing the right thing. Just look at your collection as a reward for a job well done.

As long as my family are happy with my collecting and what I spend (which they are, as they all have their own 'minority' interests) then I don't give a tinker's cuss what other people think about my financial outgoings. It's a hobby and shouldn't be the concern of any of them.

if someone wants something badly and is willing to pay the price, why should anyone else care.

You know, that 40year old virgin movie sure didn't help toy collectors in any way... My in-laws always seem to make that comparison and think it's funny as hell.

Lots of people know I collect toys. I don't look like the type that collects toys, but I do.
When people ask me why, I say "cause I can, and my Psychologist advises it to keep my murderous rage in check". When people say it's stupid, I tell them to piss off. it's what I do, it's what I like. I don't tell others how to enjoy their lives. People collect Salt and Pepper shakers, cows, owls, ceremic dogs. Well good on em. If it's something to take their mind off the bullshit going on in the world, leave em be. Same goes to me. Don't have nothing nice to say to me, piss off. |
