This is the first of (hopefully) many such open questions.
Between the action figure file cards, the comics, and the cartoons, a character may have many different and conflicting personalities, histories, or back-stories. This is your chance to tell us about which story you choose to go with, or the one you've created for this character. FIRST UP: Shipwreck. Is he just a salty sailor modeled after Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail? Or, is he the Navy S.E.A.L.? Or, is he something else. You tell us. |

He is a wise cracking sailor who was awesome on the cartoon. And he had taste, always chasing after cover girl. And he is my favorite Joe as you can tell by my name.

I didn't have the figure as a child, never read the comics, and didn't like him in the cartoon. I know he's a fan favorite though.
That said, whenever I think of Shipwreck, it is the cartoon version that comes to mind. |

I've never been a fan of Shipwreck, especially in the cartoon. I found him unbearable, to be honest.
In the comic, I could deal with him in short doses. He didn't have a talking parrot, so that was a step up, in my opinion. He was a very bossy stickler who was abrasive at times. He was kind of a jerk, but at least he was tolerable to read (even if I did want to see him taken down a few pegs). He did chill out over the years though, so that's good. So, to me, the comic version was the definitive version of the character. Visually speaking, this is the only version of Shipwreck that should ever have existed (i.e., the non-Village People version from Devil's Due):

Shipwreck: Unfortunately the worst painted, least capable figure released so far in the 25th line. I had the original and finally got him with Copperhead in the comic pack, but he was never one of my favorites really. And I think he got way to much airtime on the cartoon. He did have personality though...

He was one of my 2 first figures in the Joe line way back when so he's always held that distinction. For me, I liked the comic version a little better than the cartoon one. I never saw him as a Navy SEAL as I always felt that Wetsuit fit that mold better but Shipwreck's humor was fun to read and while he could be abrasive he had a bit more personality than Deep Six.

That's how I feel. But I still have a hard time with why an elite secret special mission force like the Joe Team would need a sailor. That's why in my universe he is a wise cracking S.E.A.L. who happens to get to drive the boats when a mission calls for it. I like the look DDP gave him, but I'm finishing up a custom of him with a more S.E.A.L. night insertion look/feel.
Sure Shipwreck likes to crack a joke, but he also slits throats if the mission calls for it. |
