First I have always collected Joes since I was very young. My father bought me pretty much all of the vintage figures I ever owed. He was a Helicopter pilot in the army for 21 years so Joes were a toy line he could agree with. He has never shown any interest in the figures he just knew I loved them. Well his Birthday was a few days ago and instead of a tie or socks I got him a Wild Bill figure from the new 25th line. His rank in the Army was a CW-4 warrant officer. So is Wild Bill according to his file card. My dad also sports a mustache and loves guns especially revolvers and has always displayed his Cav hat with pride for years. So when I spotted Wild Bill in a store I read his file and the figure is the spitting image of my father. Seeing as he was in the army for 21 years he's a very hard nosed no nonsense type of guy. Not emotional in the least. When I gave him his present the man hugged me and almost cried he loved it so much. Wild Bill now has a permanent place in my fathers office on display. I even gave him a star case to protect his figure.
I was wondering has anyone else had an experience like this? |

I don't recall my Dad ever playing Joe with me back in the day, but I do remember he and I building the vehicles and sets and putting the decals on them.

Great story!!!
You should see if one of the fine customizers here would make you up a custom card for wild bill with your fathers info on it. As for me...I got back into collecting via my son when he was 3. He spotted my vintage items packed in the attic when the wife sent us up there for something...and he got THE LOOK in his eyes. We all know THE LOOK...we all experienced it when we first seen Joes. After that....we were full force back into collecting/playing. After a bit of searching high and low for items...we decided...let's paint this off brand item and slap stickers on it and that is how the customizing started. It's been a great ride....my son is now 7 and still gets THE LOOK when he gets a new joe. Talking on the boards is great, don't get me wrong...but having someone in the same house with you to talk Joes with, run customizing ideas by...is AWESOME! Not to mention...the excuse to call in sick at work to stay home and play joes...with the kids. lol

My father never expressed an interest in GI Joe with me when i was young. He bought me some figures every now and then but I will never forget the feeling I had when I asked for Spirit while out shopping one day back in 1984. He asked me wasn't I a little old to still be getting toys (I was 11 at the time)....I was devastaed and embarrassed.....and gave up Joe the next year. My parents did spoil me and I had just about everything released those years......but they never understood how much Joe meant to me. I loved the stuff and only stopped buying them due to feeling too old at the time.
Now with kids of my own the 25th collection allows me to buy it all back and relive youth. My wife gives me a hard time for the amount that I buy, but I know it's going to pay off in spades when I give it to my son. He gets the "look" that you all have been talking about....but you know what, so do I when I see something new for the first time. I'll never change. Last edited by 82joe; 07-11-2008 at 10:59 PM.. |
