We all know that this is the ugly, yet beautifully functional, machine that the Rattler is based on. Well, I just saw this 1-seat, 30+ year-old armor-killer featured on Futureweapons, and it seems that not only is it still in use after all these years, but with the new digital upgrades, it will remain in active service for another 20 years(!), which will make its service record one of the longest in the history of military aircraft.
It always looked a bit primative compared to the Skystriker (based on the F-14), but did Cobra get the better end of the deal after all? |

Considering the Hog is still in service and the Tomcat isn't, yeah, I'd say Cobra actually came out on top.

An A-10 would get it's head handed to it, in a dogfight. They're strictly ground attack planes. They're keeping the A-10s in service, because they need that low tech solution. It also can't be beat for SAR work. No other aircraft in the current inventory can loiter in an area for as long as the A-10 can.
As for the Tomcat no longer being in service.... Well, the Navy wanted to keep buying Supercats, and conversion kits to upgrade their existing fleet of F-14 to the Supercat. Unlike the F-18 Super Hornet, the Supercat actually lived up to hte promises made for it, and Grumman was so eager to keep the Supercat factory in production, that they were selling them at a loss. The plane was killed for political reasons, outside of the military. To say anymore on it, would either get the thread locked, or lead it in a direction that would get it locked. But yeah, the A-10 is a sweet plane. I never thought it was ugly. It's appearence is brutally utilitarian, and I love that look in military vehicles. Gotta love a plane that carries a gun that can chew up tanks, and can survive a SAM going through its wing root. |
