Quote: "The Hasbro people resisted on the grounds that villain action figures “don’t sell.” We persisted. Finally, they caved in and included one Cobra figure.
Later, by the way, villains became 40% of their volume." End Quote I hate to bash Hasbro for all the good products they create, but this quote goes to show that even back then, Hasbro operated with limited foresight for what can work. Quote:"At some point along the way, we asked for female characters to be included in the line. We had women in the comics, and it seemed odd that there were none (or very few) among the toys. “Female action figures don’t sell,” we were told...." End Quote Wow this sounds familiar.

That was really cool to read. Shooter has always been one of my favorites. You should read his history sometime. Starting at a very young age he dove in and helped shaped comics. A very intimidating man, I met him a few times and always had more question to ask than I did. His efforts didn't always succeed after Marvel but they were done in the right way and always found the best talent.

As for whoever bashed the Sunbow cartoon, for shame. I wouldn't be a Joe fan if not for the cartoon. It's one of the best cartoons of the 1980s and still holds up on repeat viewings. The animated Cobra Commander is one of the greatest cartoon characters of the 1980s. He steals every scene he's in. The action scenes, the one-liners and the voice acting are always outstanding and far better than what the movie gave us. Some of the plots are also really gripping and memorable (Synthoid Conspiracy, The Traitor, Computer Complications, Excalibur). And there was some truly inspired and hilarious camp humor at times (Gamesmaster, The Viper is Coming, The Germ). There were even some surprising and on-target elements of satire (The sensationalizing Geraldo Rivera-like reporter, the take on Hollywood filmmaking in Lights! Camera! Cobra!, the blaming of the military for "causing" war by the Cobra double agent in The Traitor). It was a truly exceptional cartoon that deserves its position as a defining take on G.I. Joe. Let's also keep in mind it was closer to what Hasbro wanted, always introducing the new characters as opposed to the comic book where Larry Hama would reject or play down a lot of the new elements Hasbro wanted in the storyline. And it was remarkable just how quickly the cartoon could nail those personalities and make them into recognizable, likable characters. Just fast forward a few years to the very lame, dull, uninspired DIC episodes to see how superior the Sunbow stuff was in every way. |
