How realistic should G.I. Joe be?
I hear a lot of hate from some people toward over the top characters/concepts like Mindbender, Cobra La, Serpentor, ninja, dinosaurs, ghosts, robots, circus acrobats, and laser guns. Some people think Joe should represent a more realistic view of the military, while others say, "Screw it, these are toys so let's have fun!" Which side of the fence do you sit on? Discuss!!! |

Realistic Military has been a part of my entire life, as dependant and as a service member, so I've had plenty of realisim. So I enjoy the sci-fi, ninja, over-the-top stuff, etc. It gives a good break from reality.

There are several other lines that are plain military. For me, I've always enjoyed the odd mixture of Military and Sci-fi. I like many of the campy characters, but not all of them.

I say - it should fall between the comic and the cartoon. THe problem is, to translate that into a live action movie, is very difficult, without allowing it to be awful. I don't think a live action movie of G.I. Joe is a good idea anyway, because it WILL be more serious, and will irritate the majority of it's fans. There's just no way it can be done without sacrificing a lot (if not everything) of what makes G.I. Joe G.I. freakin' Joe.

Well, I always considered G.I.Joe to be a sort of comic-book themed team. Y'know, like the X-men or Avengers, but people who have no special powers; rather, their abilities are their own, and come from extensive training and education. Given that, I accept characters like the stereotypically Native American Spirit, sailors with pet parrots like Shipwreak, and elite soldiers who actually WANT to be called things like "Snow-Job," "Crank-Case," "Quick-Kick," or "Crazylegs" to their faces and in public.
On the other hand, I think that when everything above is handled in a realistic manner (or as realistic as possible), it actually makes the weaker material seem beleivable; a perfect balance. If they ran around firing lasers and beating up ghosts and monsters and junk, there wouldn't be anything left to counter what is already accepted as rediculous. I could stomach a G.I.Joe sequel featuring Serpentor, so long as it's handled as serious as it can be. Otherwise, it's just another kids movie (with killer ninjas). What it comes down to, is I don't want to be embarassed to say I'm a G.I.Joe fan. I want a movie to make non-Joe fans understand what is so cool about the entire Joe mythos. |

I actually lost interest when GI Joe started doing the Cobra La thing and what-not. I could understand BATS and ninjas; don't really care for the whole ninja motif, but it works. I like the realism, because to me, that was fantasy.
