I like realism. I dont mind some unusual elements like high-technology and strange mental abilities - if handled right! The common use of blasters in the cartoon was to NERF the violence, but lasers in the fiction should be handled like advanced and experimental weapons, that is used by personnel knowledgeable with the technology (like Flash, Grand Slam, and Sci-Fi). I consider jetpacks to be in the same vain as energy weapons, as they require skill and training to use right. Being a Cyberpunk fan, I like cybernetics. I see such technology as having some limitations (not just counting the time needed to adjust), and not being something that can turn you into the "6 million dollar man" - that is, no mater how strong your robotic limbs are, your flesh would give way if you try to lift a car over you head (and a truly gruesome sight that is)! I also like B.A.T.s, as long as they act like simple-minded drones that would not know their mechanical claws from their chrome-plated asses, unless they are properly guided by skilled controllers (like Tele-Vipers) - and even so, it would likely be a game of Marco Polo over a grainy televised feed. In the case of strange mental abilities, I like such things to have a natural feel about it, instead of something cheap as sorcery or psychic powers. I'm talking things like moving past people unseen even in a well lit room, intuition so keen, people think you can read minds or see into the future, or an unnatural stare that can put people in a state fear or awe. A good example of this would be Zartan. Instead of using high-tech camo to make his skin all dark, he could just cloud is presence like one of those strange people who have a tendency to startle others without any conscious effort. Such a trait would really add to his weirdness and mystique, without all that super-science, and his shadowed look could be an artistic expression, like how an old movie would cast a face - save for the eyes - in shadow as an expression of deceit.
I always had issue with their vehicles, as their design is too focused in being kid's toys (which they are, but that is besides the point) - with lots of exposed missiles pointing in all directions, redundant weapons, and other strange features that only make sense on a toy. I'm mostly a fan of the early, more realistic vehicles. The use of real life vehicles and equipment is always a good idea, and lends more weight to the fiction. I also hated all the pink laser rifles, neon spacesuits, and general downplay of the military background in the 90's (their is a nice comfortable hole in the ground I sink my head in regards to their acknowledgment - which I would likely make good use of with all the news I hear about the new G.I. Joe movie).
What I also dont like is how the Joes in the cartoon are skilled with any equipment they can get their hands on. What is the point of having Ace, when even a simple grease monkey like Clutch can fly a high performance jet fighter? I dont mind high powered characters like Snake Eyes - as he is still a good rounded out character, but I know even he has limitations as an action hero. Well rounded characters, with unique quarks and traits, with defined skills and limitations win over me more then overly capable cinematic action heroes (but, I mostly speak as a long-time role-player).
Basically, my idea of a good G.I. Joe fiction plays out like The Unit, but without the damn Desperate Housewives!

I prefer something in between. I dont want a parade of super villains and ninja magic.
But I do want to believe that pink and orange haired bikers could be a threat to our heros.

"Realism" vs. "Over The Top" is an irrelevant distinction for me, personally. As long as I'm reasonably entertained, I'm good. The best GI Joe stories though, in my mind, generally have a healthy mixture of both realism and over the top elements.
As others have mentioned previously in this thread, if I want to read/watch "realistic" military-based entertainment, there are other properties better suited for the purpose (Tom Clancy's Ranbow Six is the first to come to mind) or I can just watch a documentary. And if I want to enjoy all-out fantasy or science-fiction themed military adventure, again there are other shows/comics/books that can probably do it better than a toy-based property.

I voted "realism" but would prefer 75% realistic, 25% plausible sci-fi.
My experience lies with the cartoon for the stories and characters, not the comics, so unfortunately that's my canon.
Cobra-La back when I first saw the film jumped the shark, and fatal fluffies, and ghosts commanded to fight the Joes, and Pythonizing rays, Raptor, Crystal Ball, synthoids, underwater creatures, Snake Eyes in drag, Eco-Warriors, the Space Mutant Joes, and even Zartan's mutant-skin-glowing affliction seemed all too far-fetched and ridiculous to me.
On the other hand, the sci-fi or fantastic elements that I was okay with, were things like:
(his NAME was Sgt. Slaughter, and he was a badass... I never cared for wrestling but I always loved Slaughter)
(the cloning as a super-soldier I liked, he was a tad irritating, and the suit was absurd, but the actual plot where he was made seems about on par with Jurassic Park, and seems in the realm of possible one day)
More or less the first "killable" Cobra troopers, but I just liked them. Maybe because I loved Johnny 5 so much. Who knows.
• Laser guns, gliders, trouble bubbles and jetpacks (but not if everyone has them)
• Dreadnoks, Mindbender, Croc Master... The eccentric villains were okay and added some personality, I mean, they look a little S&M, but it was the 80s. Serpentor's and Raptor's suits, though, were a tad too much for me. And Crystal Ball looked like Dabney Coleman, and hypnotism is a crock to me.
• Ninjas: I'm okay with ninjas, so long as it's not Ninja Force. Then it's just too many. But keeping the numbers low as infiltrators/assassins does the trick for me. It's the same as lasers, special powers and force fields... When everyone has them, what's the point?

GI Joe had always been fantasy.. just like any other marvel character.. I dont agree with the poll results.. GI Joe's core storyline & essence since it was reinvented the 80's has always been fiction.. I mean come on .. guys with metal masks... android troopers .. all the basic elements of RAH are fiction..
