I agree that a good balance is nice. I prefer technology that's a little "out there," just not too far. Flash's laser rifle and the HAL = good. Every character with a laser gun = silly.

The Marvel comic from #1 to around #60 got the balance right in my view. There were some outlandish ideas, but they were presented in such a way that they were made 'believable'.
I mean, the simple notion of an arms dealer wearing a steel mask, open shirt and medalion that we take for granted is absurd when you examine it, but the way it was presented meant we never questioned the character.

they should stay with the 80s-90 i like a little of both but more realistic base.stay away from neon colors and those stupid spring loaded weapons! i dont mind over the top characters/concepts like Mindbender, Cobra La if done right, Serpentor, ninja, , robots, and laser guns. but not to far fetch like Toxo-Viper,Monstro-Viper & Predacon (51) they were stupid ideas.

I agree with the general consensus here.
Realism with a twist is perfect. Cobra-La, and neon everywhere are too much. No mutants either.
Here is where I wish some stuff could be adjusted. Eco Warriors wasn't a bad idea, but it should have been less with neon and kept more of the theme of original characters that were re-used. Flint should have remained in his WO duties, but joined the Eco Team of Joes when necessary. I disliked that he "lead" the team. Plus his FC mentioned Eco missiles, what is that crap? And if they say he HALOs in to battle, then give him a friggin parachute! Clean Sweep was ok, but Where was Airtight? Hello? Hasbro missed the boat with stuff like this. Toxo Zombie was really pushing it for me. He should have been a one off character, not a Viper of sorts.
Ninja Force was OK, but they just over did it. They did NOT need neon at all! Give them the cool Ninja weapons, cool file cards and kids would have been fine. Zartan V2 Sucked! They had the opprtunity to make a kick ass figure, but blew chunks instead. Plus, Ninjas don't need vehicles. The sneak in everywhere. Shadow Ninjas was a cool idea. Just kind of over cooked I think.
Dino Hunters - Are you for real? Let Jurrasic Park run its course. Leave it OUT of G.I.Joe.
Mega Marines - OK, the dudes were actually kinda' cool cuz you could put on the armor and then have it get bullet holes in it, etc. The Mutants were stupid as $%&#!!!
Star Brigade - Again, a neat concept, but Re-Release the Defiant! And then give Cobra something cool! Regular Joes in space suits are OK, but make sure your true astronauts are properly covered. More figs like Countdown would'a been better.
Oh, and the Micronaut-like figures with the crappy articulation HAVE TO GO (except the B.A.A.T. would actually be ok. He's a robot after all). Use Roadblock and Countdown as a good example of a Joe astronaut. Giving the figures regular firearms was dumb tho. I doubt they'd work in space. Use the XMLR-3A and even the 1A as well. Sci-Fi's laser (V1) would have been good too. Shotgun? Nope. Oh, and why did T.A.R.G.A.T. not get his backpack? Missed opportunity there. And lose the mutants from 1994.
Just say NO to Street Fighter!!!! This should have been a separate line. They can use Joe molds, but lose the Joe name from the packaging.
Thanks for listening to my rant.

I think in the middle.... as realistic as possible, but stretch that reality as FAR as possible.
Like Marvel's No-Prize - how can we explain the incredibleness in real-life terms?

Yeah, I'm on board with most of you guys. Mainly realistic but with a healthy dose of fairly plausible sci-fi thrown in. Someone mentioned the early James Bond films as a template and I've always thought that too.
People always say that G.I. Joe got progressively more sci-fi oriented as time went on, bordering and often crossing into the ridiculous. I totally agree but let's not forget that the first assortment of ARAH toys had laser cannons and jet packs to go along with the jeeps and tanks. I think it was always meant to be a blending of largely realistic military action and envelope-pushing science fiction.

Putting my bias aside for anything post 1990 for a second.....I bought that GI JOE ACTION FIGURE ENCYCLOPEDIA (forget the actual name...the one that has EVERY figure and vehicle listed between 1982-1994) as a reference on what to buy and what to pass on. To be honest, the neo day-glow colors just suck. I'd be hard pressed to pick 5 or 6 figures (tops) that would be worth it. As far as the vehicles......forget it.
I don't mind a little bit of sci-fi or "out there" characters. I'm down with Destro, Zartan and odd balls like that but I do prefer a more military themed (ie; olive green) line of toys.

well I don't think the answer is to wrap everything up in one package. Example. Batman. There is TDK, DCAU and the original series. These are just three examples of Batman that I like. These are also three examples that have little in common other than the fact that they are all Batman. You can pretty much pick and choose your favorite
