I don't know how many of you did not read the comics and paid no attention to cards like me. When I was a kid, until Duke, Steeler led my original 13. He had the tank and visually was the stand out of the green guys.
Anyone else have thier own leader? |

In order:
Hawk, Steeler, Stalker, Grandslam Duke eventually became my leader although based on the file cards it didn't make sense. I reasoned GI Joe operated above the military in their own rank and file.

Flash, then Duke, then Flint, then Hawk. Rank mattered not to me, coolness did, until General Hawk, well, because he was a General, Duh!

i had very few joes and never owned duke as a kid, i got hawk though, the jacketed version and he and sgt slaughter kept my small joe team squared away. i had lady jaye, chuckles, sci fi, dial tone, dusty, tunnel rat, hit n run, shock wave, life line, snake eyes, hardball, down town, outback, frost bite, blizzard, back blast, ship wreck, rock n roll, light foot, psych out, recoil, and repeater that i remember oh and super trooper too...i mostly had cobras and grenadiers, still do
oh and i remember getn some classic joes when they remade em into slaughter marauders and tiger force. |

Usually it was Stalker for me. Though sometimes it was Hawk or Grunt. The tan Grunt was my first figure with swivel arm battle grip so that made him the man for a while.

I was (and still am) a devout follower of the GI Joe comic continuity, so I tended not to stray too far from what they offered in terms of leadership. In '82, I didn't own Hawk. I never could get my grubby mitts on him for some reason. So, I always played him as an off-screen leader, sometimes communicating with his underlings by way of a wall-screen (that I made myself).
On the battlefield, though, it was always Stalker, who always said "Dag!" in my universe. For those unfamiliar with the early comics, he said that on occasion. I just way over-did it, making him spout it off every few minutes. I'm pretty sure his teammates were getting outrageously sick of hearing it. When I got Duke the next year, he and Stalker shared the leadership duties.
