I collect Joes not for $$$ or to try to have a bigger/better collection than the next guy...I collect them because they remind me of a great childhood...riding my black beat up off brand BMX all over town, playing Castlevania past midnight, drinking Pepsi from a glass bottle...and taking my Joes everywhere...bath tub, sandbox, church...heck I even convinced a doctor to X-Ray my Monkeywrench fig when I got my appendix out! (still have it)
So who cares if the next gen will love them or not...we love'em and I'm sure they'll find something that hopefully years down the road that will mean something to them!

Maybe in another 25 years kids who took a liking to the 25th line will enjoy a 50th anniversary.

I can't promise that my oldest daughter will be the Joe fan of the future, but I've done my part to gain her interest.
First off, I gathered all my GI Joe animals together, both vintage and 25th (I never realized what a zoo the PIT really must be) and she plays with them for hours. I guess there's lots of adventures to be had between Junkyard, Timber, Serpentor's snake and Killer Croc's pet, among others.
For another, she's become almost obsessed with Snake Eyes. She and her little sister love to go into my toy room to touch and play with everything they can reach. Right now my coffee table is displaying Snake Eyes and the Punisher vs. all my Cobra Troopers. My eldest went right to Snake Eyes (initially because of his cool sword and doggie) and asked who he was and why she couldn't see his face. I explained to her that SE was injured so badly in a crash that he can no longer talk, and no one can stand to see his face. That was enough for her so that now it's all she talks about. "What does he look like under there?" "Is his face like your Darth Vader?" "Did they make the toys so you can't take off his mask?" There's interest there that appears to be getting past her Disney Princess defenses. What she decides to do with that in the future is all up to her. I won't force them on her or her baby sister.
Forget it Jake, it's Hisstank.

I think we could be the last to enjoy such an innocent and memorable childhood, because the world is so different today. Today's kids have everything they want and are generally spoiled by video games, the Internet, and other gadgets (like iPods and cellphones). Plus, the collectible market (card and miniature games) have ruined their value system. What parent hasn't had a child beg them to buy that $100 Pokemon card?
Kids today also have a short attention span and very little imagination. Heck, I remember going outside to play and finding a stick to use as a sword and grabbing a garbage can lid as a shield. And how many of you guys used to take your Joes out to play in dirt mounds and sand piles? We didn't need a huge playset when the world was our battlefield and playground! You just don't see that much today. My original G.I. Joes still have dirt in their joints from where they climbed up the "dangerous cliffs" to take out that Cobra fortification (in the ditch next to my house...heh).
And back in the day, we couldn't get every toy on the shelf. We got what our parents could afford...or chose to buy us. I would scrape together change and allowance to buy my next Joe and it was always a special event. And buying vehicles -- it was a much bigger celebration. I'd get on my bike and ride two miles to the store, grinning with anticipation the whole way. Who would I get this time? Snake Eyes? Zap? Destro? And I'll never forget the excitement of racing home with that bag hanging from the handlebars of my bike. Every one of my Joes were special because of that. I still have most of my original figures and Short-Fuze has a special place on my shelf, because he was my first purchase.
I have a nephew who is seven and I am trying to impress on him the joys of childhood. Yesterday, I gave him six new G.I. Joe figures and a Plano tackle box to store everything in. Then we went outside and found a good spot to set up in the backyard. By the time the afternoon was over, he had built a fort for the Joes and dug a big foxhole for Heavy Duty. You should have seen his face -- it was priceless. I'm going to keep giving him Joes whenever I see him and share this with him. Because that's what we gotta do guys -- reach out to this next generation and teach them how to play again.
