I was wondering if anybody could recommend any books on modern military stuff. I'd like to get some ideas on how to update the joes. Maybe some stuff on navy seals, rangers, green berets, and some foreign special forces. Maybe French, Israeli, Russian, and British? I really have no ideas, and would appreciate ant ideas.
Thanks

Rogue Warrior is an interesting one about the Seals. Kill Bin Laden is interesting about Delta in Afghanistan. Black Hawk Down for Rangers and Delta.

Sounds like you are looking for ideas for custom figures. I can't say I have any experience with that, but if I had to start I would look to hobby shops that specialize in models and miniatures for role playing games. There are usually reference type books for people looking to create specific military uniforms of specific groups, battalions, platoons, special forces, etc. I know I've seen books for model airplane and tank builders that have very detail reference markings and paint schemes for just about every squadron and tank platoon.

Thanks everybody. Part if my wanting to read is custom ideas, but another part is that I'd like to structure the Joe team realistically. I'm 14, so it's not like I know anything about the military

The older Osprey books give a brief overview of structure and famous missions, etc., plus some nicely drawn plates (which were and are still often my inspiration), so things like the two Vietnam War books, Falklands War, SAS, Royal Marines, etc., are all very good (though probably not relevant to what you're looking for).
My feeling is that the plates have of late gone downhill though so try (look through) before you buy. (With that said the recent book on Ninja has lots of nice illustrations, but that's slightly OT for your request ;) ) |
