What do you think G.I. Joe has positively gained over the past 30 yrs?
What do you think it has lost over that period that has been to its detriment? Storm |

Gained? Hard Core Fans. This is why sites like this exist. We are a HUGE reason the Joe line still goes on.
Lost? Opportunity to gain new fans. Somehow, with the glut of other toy lines, the economy, and those blasted video games (and I'm sure there's many more reasons) We haven't had the influx of fans that I would like to see for Joes. This is a toy line that has relevance to the realities of our world, yet provides a measure of escapism where you can suspend that reality and enter a realm of fantasy as well. I would love for Hasbro to be able to come up with an uber marketing scheme to drive new fans to Joes that really goes outside of the box. If this can be successfully addressed, then the future of Joes is in very good hands.

gained: my heart and money
lost: the ability to attract kids as they age. When I was a kid, my older brother had special legos for him, glue together models, explosive rockets, RC toys... and other things for more mature kids. Based on things he grew up with. The Joe line 1st did that by making their figures and playsets more in-depth year after year. Then when kids started to loose interest.... they gave up on 12 year olds and made neon eco drug haters to attract 5 year olds. therefor making Dad's not want to buy the toys for kids, or older brothers (my mom made my bros pick up my Xmas gifts at the malls for me), or maturing kids who aren't stupid and want snow figures to look like they matched actual snow. Kids want to get into what older kids like, and at that point(1991) I was embarrassed by the line. You need to keep realism in toys so kids can relate. then in 1997 they tried to make it up to us 20' somethings. But that was a true failure in quality. |
