Indeed its not only the CH-47 yet also the CH-46 of which both did inspire the Tomahawk. See here = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomahawk_(G.I._Joe)
As stated in the link, although the Tomahawk is not exactly a twin identical of either, the Tomahawk nonetheless still drew inspiration from both. Anyone know the reason why (and how) both the CH-46 and CH-47 served as inspiration? Thanks to Starfighter for bringing this up. C'mon Tankers we need more info! I agree with Starfighter on this. If you look at the CH-46 you can see that it was truley the insperation for the Tomahawk. The 46 has three landing gear the 47 has four and the 46 is closer in size. What Wiki says is "While not identical, the Tomahawk is similar in design to the Marine CH-46 Sea Knight and the Army CH-47 Chinook." Is says nothing about which one inspired it.
WHO INSPIRED THE TOMAHAWK? A. the Chinook. B. the Sea Hawk. C. all of the above... My own answer is "C" all of the above. This is simply my own perspective / argument, why. Sea Hawk = Marines. Chinook = Army. Tomahawk's pilot Lift Ticket holds the key (answer). His bio says he's one of those guys whom "joined the army" to get out of his home town. Chinook = Army. If Tomahawk = Marine its pilot should be = Marine. Tomahawk is piloted by Lift Ticket who explicitedly = "joined the army." Once more, I do not necessarily disagree with you my friend. I can see Tomhawk maybe being a classified helicopter who indeed drew inspiration from both the CH-46 of the Marines and the Army-piloted CH-47 Chinook Last edited by Tuskegee Joe; 03-19-2011 at 10:41 PM.. |

I think the extra tail fan was put on the Tomahawk for added play. One could argue that if the rear 5-rotors were damaged by a Rattler (for instance) the smaller fan rotor could activate and keep the airframe from spinning out of control and crashing, giving the pilot enough time to safely land.
Not all helicopters have tail rotors. The NOTAR system has been around for quite a while. NOTAR - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
