I like the initial idea , but agree that some of the original characters need to be present to intergrate the new ones into the fold just like the new star wars film has. maybe it could be done in a from the ground up perspective , say something like G.I.JOE:GRUNTS , following a new bunch of recruits as they develop from rookies into full team members , guided by established characters who are now effectively training their replacements etc .
maybe some of the international characters could be introduced such as Action Force etc

Almost all of my customs are new characters for Joes. As far as Cobra goes I just took the Cobra Commander concept from IDW and the Commander is different people when one dies he hi replaced (also helps get to use all of the versions of CC). Destro has been passed down to his heir ect. I still use the old characters but with the exception of a few most of my main guys are all new original characters or newer Hasbro characters.

Or, just stop using the same core of characters. Create a new core. The universe is extensive as is. Nice roster to choose from with good, existing characters. This helps Hasbro with trademark rights (in so much as not paying for renewal for something they are not using), it uses something existing, giving familiar faces for the established base (that's us) while doing something fresh for it's reboot and a new base of fans.
For example, Duke is now Falcon. There is even material there to work with that Flacon is the younger brother of Duke and the next generation. Scarlett is now Jinx or Covergirl, who would appeal to females today because she is both attractive being a former model and independent capable of operating vehicles and machinery, maybe even an accompished mechanic, etc. Roadblock is Rocknroll. When he's not providing support for his teammates, he likes to get loud and rock. Kids like that. Drop Cobra Commander. Been there, done that. Use Destro as their main antagonist. An arms dealer who goes rogue, seems more identifiable than a used car dealer who looks like someone out of a pac man game and may/may not/maybe looks like a serpent. Foot soldiers? Marketing for kids and can't be too graphic with deaths? But wanting to move past everyone parachuting to safety or want to make the joes come off as an accomplished unit? Use BATS. To many kids, if not most, robots are cool amd more interesting than your generic bad guy yes man. And having Cover Girl running a tank over them, or having RocknRoll mow down several dozen of them, handles all of those concerns simultaneously.

I would love a Next Gen. We've seen attempts at this but I think this is what Gijoe really got away from. What I loved most as a kid was the total new line up every year.
I would maybe have some cameos from older Joes. Some would probably go to SAD or become Contractor mercenaries. Cobra would need new leadership. ANACONDA is a name we haven't seen yet. Maybe CC could be in prison, but I think Billy stepping into his father's footsteps has so much potential. I would start a new team with only post 1990 Joes. Maybe only post 2000. So: Colonel Rapid-Fire (CO) Major Barrage (XO) I think an executive officer was sorely missing in the Joe Chain of command. These both count for Hawk. Freestyle (pilot)= Ace Carla Greer = Doc Barrel-Roll (junior officer)= Grunt Sgt Major Rampage (think Stalker and Beachhead combined) =Duke Sightline = Flash Wreckage = Tripwire Nightfox = Clutch Ice Storm = Snow Job Helix = Scarlett Rollbar = Zap Sgt Stone = Stalker Kickstart = Grand-Slam Long-Range = Steeler Cannonball = Wild-Bill Hollow-Point = Gung-Ho Bombstrike = Cover-Girl Depthcharge = Torpedo Hard-Drive = Breaker Hi-Tech = Short-fuze Crosshairs = Rock'n'Roll Dart = Airborne Kamakura = Snake-Eyes Not sure how many to start with but I think twenty characters is better than 13. Plus. I think the O13 was special and this would be a new direction. I like to think of 82 and 83 combined.

I have thought that this would be a good idea since Ddp or Idw did it back in the early 2000 when they relaunched the Joe title. A good mix of old and new characterd would be the ideal way to do it IMO anyway. Having a few of the original Joes promoted makes way for a new generation of characters while acknowledging the past Gen while still pushing forward. Bazooka being an over weight security guard was fantastic and it and it made sence for that character doing that with 90% of the Joes while moving up guys like Duke, Flint Lady Jaye, Beachhead etc Gives room for new characters to have bigger roles.

Don't forget that some of the Joes had children. Stalker's son could take over his codename, Marissa Faireborn as Flint, and Sean Collins has taken over as Snake Eyes. This is a classic way of keeping the old and getting something new.

I loved the Valor vs. Venom/Spy Troops era of joe, because of all the new characters. Replace Snake Eyes with Kamakura & Tiger Claw. Have them go up against Shadow Strike and Slash. I've got no problem with Duke, Flint or Beachhead being the aged CO. Carla "Doc" Greer would have a spot on my new team, as well as Hi Tech, Night Fox, Bombstrike, Heavy Duty, Repeater & Salvo. I like the idea of Destro's heirs continuing his legacy, and I like the idea of Cobra Commander being a revolving door of successful assassinations, really controlled by an aged Tomax & Xamot. Cobra would basically be the strong arm of Extensive Enterprises.

These are all great ideas. I think I will try my hand at writing the DTC characters. I will let you know how it turns out.
