Does Cobra use ranks that are the same as other militaries.
Example..Private..Cpl..Sgt. Lt..Captain. I know a some do..like Major Blud. I've always imagined Cobra using like Roman military structure. Also..Viper and Cobra trooper. I never got the difference. I always seen Vipers as brand new recruits. Yet they seem more well equipped then the original Cobra troops. As far as Cobra officers. Again..what does that really mean. I get there is no real answer. I personally like specifics. I know the Joe's were to represent what is all good in the military of the worlds most powerful nation. Simple toy PR..brainwash kids. Each joe member had a specific rank. Cobra represents the evil of the world. But wish they would have been more specific on ranks, and how they recruited so many to fight the government the world. Though..security companies..discarded vets..warlords of third world nations etc..etc. I'm just really curious how Cobra kept such forces with constant defeats to 5 joes. |

Because Cobra never operates at the same level as other military operations (no Brigades, Divisions, etc.), that level of ranking is not really necessary. In most cases, Cobra will operate in units the size of a Company or smaller. When operating in a really large force, Cobra Commander takes ultimate command.
I see Troopers as the basic level of cannon fodder for Cobra and the Vipers are the better trained and equipped elite forces. As a terrorist/crime organization, the level of authority each member has is based on what they can assert over their contemporaries and the authority bestowed upon them by Cobra Commander and other "officers". I think they may use a few basic ranks like Sergeant and Captain, but there wouldn't be a need for sub-variations like Sergeant 1st Class, Gunnery Sergeant, 1st and 2nd Lieutenant and so on. Like other terrorist organizations, Cobra also operates in "cells". Take Python Patrol as an example. They have their own Troopers, Vipers, Tele-Vipers, Crimson Guard, etc. Their distinction is in what part of the world that they operate. Likewise, Cobra has Ice Vipers, Snow Serpents, Arctic Tele-Vipers and more that operate in their own cold weather "cell" as well. Because these forces are largely autonomous, small variations in rank are completely unnecessary. That is how I see it, anyway. How does Cobra keep the recruits coming? Easy...greed. The promise of potential wealth and/or power can provide an almost limitless supply greedy and power hungry people for Cobra. There is never a shortage of evil in the world. |

In the early years of ARAH, some of the file cards for Cobra troops had grades listed on them like the Joes did, implying that Cobra did have some kind of rank structure. The original 1982 Cobra Trooper and Officer had "E-4 (or equivalent)" and "O-4 (or equivalent)," respectively, on their cards. That would make the Trooper a corporal or specialist, and the Officer a major, based on U.S. Army ranks. The HISS Driver was an O-5 (lieutenant colonel) and the Stinger Driver was an O-4 like the Officer. The original CG and Eels were both E-4s, I believe. But I think as time went on, the grades were used less and less for Cobra. I'm not sure about the later years, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were phased out entirely or, at best, used only occasionally.

There's no shortage of mercs, ex-cons, the disenfranchised, refugees with no where to go, thugs, ex-military types, lowlifes and others to join Cobra. But I think that it lowered the quality of Cobra's forces over time compared to the devoted, mostly American forces of the comic's early years. I recall reading something from I think it was General Westmoreland, about the draft and how only a certain percentage of lower class conscripts ever turn into good soldiers. It was not a high percentage.

PI believe they use ranks it's an easily understood system especially for former military recruits and an easy way to set up a pay structure. But there's always exceptions. Especially the named Cobras like Firefly or Storm Shadow. They get paid differently, although I think they hold a rank within Cobra just for ease of Control. Like Firefly probably receives a Colonel's pay just as a retainer, but generally commands no troops, unless he needs some, but also gets paid extra for big jobs. Same goes for Zartan, Scrap-Iron, Mindbender. I think all the "named" Troop Commanders are Lt. Colonels, like Skullbuster, Lt. Clay Moore, Letal, Snow Serpent Commander. They function as real troop commanders, and are probably utterly ruthless. If one sees Cobra as a mercenary/ Private military Contractors like I do, then these guys need ranks mjust to be able to coordinate with local forces they assist.
I see any cobra officer is no joke. He would have to be the utterly ruthless to get to his position. I would say O-4 Major is the highest a a faceless Officer gets to before the Commander takes notice. I think Crimson Guardsmen start as officers like the lawyers and doctors in the US military, and the Immortals are all Colonel equivalents. But they are more like Government rank structures sort of like GS.
